Neil never trusted anyone, he was always on the run. He was on the run for about eight years, but not alone, but with his mother. His mother died a year ago, and now Neil is left alone. Josten's real name is Nathaniel Wesninsky. He changed many names, but never forgot this. His father is Nathan Wesninsky, a butcher. Neil had many scars on his body from a lifetime of running from his idiot father. Nathan's mother stole $5 million from him, and now only $1 million remains.

Neil was sitting in the school locker room smoking a cigarette when his coach, Hernandez, came to him and told him he'd applied for the Fox Hole Exy team on Josten's behalf. Neil had heard of the team because it included someone with ties to his past: Kevin Day.

“I disagree,” Neil said, throwing away his cigarette butt.

"They're already here," Hernandez said, as Kevin Day and Coach Wymack entered the locker room.

Waymak began to talk about the team, handing over a folder where everything needed to be signed.

Neil threw the folder away, said he disagreed, and ran out into the street with his duffel bag. But someone was already waiting for him there. It was Andrew. Minyard swung his stick and hit Neil in the ribs. Neil fell, gasping for air, clutching the area where he'd hit it.

"Damn it, Minyard! This is why we can't get decent people," Wymack shouted as he and Kevin walked out into the street.

Habits Neil smokes occasionally, but more often he lights a cigarette and lets it burn itself out. The smell of smoke reminds him of his mother, which is both comforting and painful. Before Neil moves to Palmetto, all of his belongings fit into a bag, including the folder, so Neil either locks it in a safe, with a key, or takes it with him. While Neil was on the run, he kept a carefully crafted folder full of newspaper articles about Kevin and Rico's careers, concealing vital information under the guise of fanaticism. The folder also contains cash, emergency contacts, the addresses of cash stashes, a forged note from an eye doctor for contact lenses (as well as a box of brown contact lenses), and his uncle Stuart's phone number. The sum totaled approximately $250,000, one-quarter of what his mother had originally stolen from his father. To protect his folder in his dorm room, Neil buys a small safe on his first day at Fox Tower. He wears old, unremarkable clothes to blend in and go unnoticed. They are pale and faded, with frayed hems, which has previously led to him being compared to street scum. When he starts at Palmetto, he owns exactly eight outfits. His wardrobe consists primarily of worn, basic items like T-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. He has no particular sense of style, valuing practicality above all else, so he chooses clothes based on their ability to hide his scars and make him blend in, becoming a "gray shadow."
