Appearance.
Saga is a tall man with a long, muscular build. His hair is one of the longest of the Gold Saints; it stands up straight, only appearing wavy when swept to one side. His hair is violet-blue, his eyes are viridian, and his skin is pale in animation. His eyebrows are pronounced and a darker shade of blue. Among all the Saints, he has a peculiarity: in his evil or corrupted form, his hair turns light gray and his eyeballs acquire a fiery pink color, indicating that they are bloodshot. Likewise, his skin in this state turns pale, and shadows descend from the bottom of his eyelids, becoming thinner until they reach his chin. Every time he changes personality, his hair color changes.
Personality.
Saga is a person with two personalities (one good and one bad), as is characteristic of his belonging to the Gemini constellation. He has a good side (marked by blue hair) and an evil side (characterized by gray hair), which led him to suffer from schizophrenia and dissociative identity disorder, sometimes resulting in internal conflict. Saga is perhaps one of the most complex characters in the entire series; he is intelligent, cunning, serious, cold, and very powerful. Despite demonstrating villainous behavior and being largely responsible for the deaths throughout the Twelve Temples, he is considered a natural leader by most of his companions, to the point that in the Hades saga, he is tasked with taking Athena's head to the god of the underworld. For this reason, Shura of Capricorn, Aphrodite of Pisces, Deathmask of Cancer, and Camus of Aquarius obey and follow him as leader without opposing his orders. Their mutual hatred with his twin brother Kanon is also evident throughout the series from the beginning, as Kanon was the first to realize Saga's dark, evil side. Because of this, Saga imprisoned Kanon in Cape Sounion to drown him. Later, Kanon deceives Poseidon to dominate the world and avenge himself on Saga.
That's good.
When under control, Saga has a good character, kind, loyal, and is one of the knights most dedicated to the goddess Athena. He often proves capable of resisting his dark side, but only for a very short period. During the battle of the twelve temples, it can be seen how he often argues with his dark side. In his good side, Gemini is capable of giving his life to demonstrate his repentance for the acts committed by his counterpart; at the end of the twelve temples, he commits suicide in front of Saori so that she would forgive him and thus demonstrate his great loyalty to the goddess.
Saga Malo
The origin of this evil personality is never clearly revealed, but it undoubtedly intensified after the accusations against him by Kanon and the lack of appointment of a successor to the Pope. This personality makes Saga a ruthless, violent, and perverse being whose only goal is to dominate the Earth and defeat Athena, seeing himself as the "Savior of this world," and the most suitable to protect humans from the gods, since he maintains that they should be governed by the strongest; in other words, the negative side of Gemini justifies the abuses committed in his role as Pope, done in order to satisfy his own thirst for power, as something just and legitimate based on the great strength he possesses. To achieve his purpose, he plans ruthlessly, killing anyone who stands in his way, whoever they may be, even Saori Kido. It can be presumed that Saga's evil personality is nothing more than an exteriorization of his true self.
History.
Twenty-four years earlier, it is said that Saga and his twin brother Kanon were born somewhere on Earth and teleported to the Sanctuary, where they were found by Patriarch Shion, the former Aries Knight. Upon finding the twins, he saw a third baby. Dohko, who was in the Five Peaks, told him he should eliminate it, as it was the Star of Ill Omen of the goddess Ker, but Shion refused, saying that even if it were an enemy, he couldn't take the life of a baby. The third baby possessed Saga, leaving Kanon and Shion unconscious, and erased the memories of the Aries and Libra Knights. At fifteen, Saga was one of the most beloved people in Greece, almost considered a god. In fact, he was the Pope's favorite, along with Aiolos, as a candidate to succeed him. He was one of the first Golden Saints of his generation (not considering Dohko of Libra). Always admirable, a kind and generous person. Only his brother Kanon knew about the evil side that existed within Saga due to his "bipolar" mentality and tried to convince him to seize power of the Sanctuary. However, Saga's evil side hadn't yet taken control of him, so he decided to imprison his twin in a prison located at Cape Sounion. When Kanon wanted Saga to reveal himself to him, because the Pope hadn't chosen him as his successor, Saga decided to lock him in the dungeon of Cape Sounion, where Kanon continued insulting him and urging him to follow his dark side to fulfill his ambitions. Until that moment, Saga remained completely calm; finally, he unleashed his anger and silenced his brother. From that moment on, Saga's dark personality awakened and became evil.
History.
That same night, Saga visits the elderly Patriarch Shion, who was stargazing on Star Hill, having realized that the battle with Hades would come sooner than he imagined. Seeing Saga in the forbidden area, Shion reprimands him for his transgression. But Saga, whose evil side had already awakened, begins to question Shion's decision to choose Aiolos over him to lead the Golden Saints. Shion then tells Saga that despite his power, there were still remnants of evil in his heart, which is why he chose Aiolos. Saga, enraged, murders Shion. Taking advantage of Shion's mask, Saga usurps his place and becomes Patriarch. Having achieved his goal, Saga, posing as the Pope, enters the Goddess's chambers and attempts to kill Athena as a baby with a golden dagger, but Aiolos prevents him at the last moment. After attacking him, Aiolos sees the Patriarch's face, which to his surprise, is not Shion's. Saga, discovered, attacks Aiolos, but Aiolos escapes the Sanctuary, taking Saori and the Sagittarius Golden Cloth with him. Saga then issues a general alert to the Sanctuary, claiming that Aiolos "betrayed them and tried to kill" the Goddess and that therefore, he is considered a traitor and a dead man. Feeling shame for his actions, he attempts suicide with the same golden dagger he used to try and kill baby Athena, but is stopped by the goddess Ker, who makes it clear that she still needs him alive to fulfill her purpose, after which she erases his memories.
History.
Saga impersonated the true Patriarch of the Sanctuary for thirteen years, manipulating all of Athena's Knights to his advantage, deceiving them with false promises of power by making them believe that the Goddess was still in the Sanctuary. When he learned that the Sagittarius Gold Cloth was in Japan, he sent Ikki of the Phoenix, but he failed, so Saga ordered several Silver Saints to retrieve the helmet, but they all failed. Saga ordered the kidnapping of Saori Kido, although the person in charge of the mission also failed. Later, he learned that Ikki of the Phoenix returned to the Island of Death Queen and ordered the Devil Saints commanded by Jango, who were renegade saints exiled on the island, to kill Ikki. Saga himself caused the explosion and destruction of the island, when Ikki, Seiya, Shun, and Hyōga were there, but they were saved by Athena before it exploded. Saga ordered someone to be sent to the Jamir mountains for Mu, to help him search for the Sagittarius Gold Cloth that had disappeared again. After seeing that the Silver Saints failed, he decided to call the Gold Saint Milo of Scorpio. Saga ordered Milo to go to Japan to kill the Bronze Saints. Milo initially refused, given his honor as a Gold Saint to fight against those he considered far inferior to him. Saga told him that they might have in their possession the Sagittarius Gold Cloth that had been missing from the Sanctuary for thirteen years, and that there were two Gold Saints who had fled the Sanctuary who could help them, those of Libra and Aries. Finally, Milo agreed to go to Japan to kill the Bronze Saints. Then Aiolia of Leo arrived to ask Saga to let him go in Milo's place, permission he obtained. Saga explained to Milo that he was sending him in his place because he was the brother of the Gold Saint Aiolos of Sagittarius, Athena's "traitor," and that he would seek to "cleanse his honor."
History.
Saga also sends Deathmask of Cancer to kill the old master Dohko of Libra, but he fails thanks to the intervention of Shiryū of Dragon and Mū of Aries. He also sends Aphrodite of Pisces to Andromeda Island to eliminate the island's master, Daidalos of Cepheus, whom he defeats easily. Saga receives a letter from Saori informing him of her visit to the Sanctuary and Saga prepares a deadly trap for them. Saga receives Aiolia of Leo, whom he questions about his return without the Sagittarius Gold Cloth and without killing his enemy. Aiolia, however, says he wants to see Athena, to which Saga replies that it's impossible. Aiolia prepares to challenge him to achieve this, so Saga calls him a traitor, just like his brother Aiolos. Aiolia tells Saga what Athena told him in Japan. When Saga realizes that Aiolia knows the truth, he attacks and knocks him down with one blow. Then they attack each other, but are interrupted by Shaka of Virgo. Saga orders Shaka to kill Aiolia, and in the middle of their fight, when Aiolia is distracted, he attacks him with the Genrōmaōken, controlling his mind and ordering him to kill the Bronze Saints when they pass through the Temple of the Lion. At the foot of the Sanctuary, Saga's trap takes effect, as the Silver Saint Ptolemy of Sagitta pierces Athena's chest with a golden arrow that will kill her in twelve hours, and Ptolemy explains that only the Pope knows how to remove it. Saga intervenes when Seiya of Pegasus reaches the Temple of the Twins, creating a labyrinth of light and shadow with his cosmos to prevent Seiya from finding the exit. Then, when Shiryū of Dragon, Hyōga of Cygnus, and Shun of Andromeda arrive at the entrance to the Temple, Seiya emerges from where he had entered, to their astonishment, meeting them.
History.
They decide to enter the temple together, but they are again victims of a labyrinth of lights and shadows projected by Saga from the Pope's Chamber. When they think they have found the exit, they are actually returning to the entrance. Saga increases his illusion and makes them see two temples instead of one. They decide to split into two groups, Hyoga and Shun on one side and Seiya and Shiryu on the other. Then the illusion of the Gemini Saint projected by Saga, with the Gemini Gold Cloth, appears before Hyoga and Shun. Hyoga attacks the illusion with his Diamond Dust, but the attack is returned against them. Hyoga attacks again with the Aurora Thunder Attack, despite Shun's reluctance, but it is again repelled against them. Meanwhile, Seiya and Shiryu see another illusion of the Gemini Saint, but Shiryu says he doesn't feel his presence. When Seiya is about to attack him, he is stopped by Shiryu, who tells him that the Gemini Gold Saint is not there. Shiryu says he feels as if someone is projecting their cosmos there. He also says he sees no obstacle and knows where the exit is. Shiryu grabs Seiya and runs, dragging him along, Seiya believes they are lost because he thought they were going against the Gemini Gold Saint, but they finally managed to leave the Temple of the Twins. Saga admits his mistake in not counting on Shiryu's blindness and decides to finish off Hyoga and Shun. After receiving his own blow, Hyoga faints, although Shun manages to get up. Shun attacks the illusion with the Andromeda Chain, but the chain collapses before touching it. Shun, sensing that he is going to be attacked, forms the Andromeda Nebula Defense, forming circles on the ground. Shun challenges him to enter the circle, but when he does, nothing happens to him.
Shun believes the Saint doesn't actually exist. Then Saga's illusion attacks him with the Other Dimension. Shun, thanks to his chains, manages to hold onto the temple pillars, but Hyōga is thrown into another dimension. The illusion repeats the Other Dimension attack, but Shun holds on again thanks to his chain. The illusion breaks one end of the chain, bringing him closer to falling into the attack. When the other end breaks, someone causes Saga to lose concentration and he stops sending his cosmos to the Temple of the Twins, preventing Shun from falling into the other dimension. Saga wonders who could have done it, ruling out Athena, Mū of Aries, Seiya of Pegasus, Shiryū of Dragon, Aldebaran of Taurus, and Dohko of Libra. He finally discovers it's Ikki of Phoenix from Kanon Island. Saga projects the illusion onto the Temple of the Twins again while Shun is still there. The illusion asks Shun why he didn't leave when he had the chance, and Shun tells him he couldn't leave Hyōga wandering in another dimension. The illusion attacks him again with the Other Dimension, but Shun reacts, managing to rejoin the broken parts of his chain. Then Shun attacks the illusion with the Thunder Wave, penetrating it through the helmet. Andromeda's chain manages to traverse space and launch an interdimensional attack against Pope Saga, who was in the Pope's Chamber. The good part of Saga's personality begins to speak to his bad side, telling him that he fought to defend the Temple of the Twins, but that Shun won and he couldn't deny the outcome of a fight, to which the bad side of Saga finally agrees, letting Shun pass.
History.
He reappears taking a bath while the Bronze Saints were fighting Shaka of Virgo in the Virgo Temple. Saga didn't believe the Bronze Saints would have reached that temple, but he trusted Shaka to stop them. He appears again when the Sagittarius Gold Cloth returns to the Sanctuary, causing him to doubt whether Aioros of Sagittarius was still alive. Then he has a nightmare believing that the Gold Saints were turning against him instead of defending him. And then he thinks he sees Athena and Aioros arriving at the Patriarch's Chamber to kill him. He reappears after learning that Aiolos had left a will in the Centaur Temple, and right after breaking a cup he was holding, he orders Shura of Capricorn to kill the Bronze Saints who were about to reach the Capricorn Temple. Later, he curses Camus of Aquarius for pairing his fight against Hyōga and for leaving the way open for Seiya of Pegasus and Shun of Andromeda. He also recounts everything that happened up to that point and can't help but doubt the outcome of the battle, although he trusts Aphrodite of Pisces, the last remaining Gold Saint, to defend him. When Shun collapses after receiving the Blood Rose from Aphrodite of Pisces, Saga believes his victory is certain. Shortly after, Seiya of Pegasus arrives at the Pope's Chamber and Saga removes the mask he always wore, revealing his face. At that moment, Saga's good personality takes control. Saga congratulates Seiya for reaching there, but Seiya runs towards him to hit him. Saga tells him that he cannot remove the arrow from Athena. Seiya replies that he had been told that he was the only one who could remove it. Seiya attacks him again with the Pegasus Comet Punch, but Saga doesn't move.
History.
Then Saga starts to cry, and explains to Seiya that it is Athena's Shield that can save him if he directs it towards Athena, reflecting it towards the Goddess. But at that moment Saga begins to change personality, reverting to his evil personality and attacking Seiya. Saga believes that if he defeats Athena and recovers his scepter, Nike the goddess of Victory, and along with Athena's Shield, he could challenge the Gods. Seiya gets up and attacks him with the Pegasus Comet Punch, tearing Saga's clothes. Then Saga brings back his Cloth, the Gemini Gold Cloth, to Seiya's surprise.
Saga attacks Seiya with the Another Dimension, but then Saga's good personality intervenes, interrupting the attack and saving Seiya. However, the evil personality continues to dominate his body, and Saga decides that if he can't kill him, he will deprive him of his five senses, beginning to take them away from Seiya one by one. Then Seiya gets back up, projecting a huge cosmos and attacks Saga with his Pegasus Meteor. At first, Saga manages to stop them, but as they gain speed and power, they end up knocking him down. However, Saga gets up and hits Seiya, and when he prepares to finish him off, Seiya reacts and grabs him, attacking him with his Pegasus Rolling Crush. Both impact the ground, but Saga gets up without any injuries and prepares to hit Seiya, but the faces on the helmet of the Gemini Gold Cloth begin to weep. Saga says that he is the only one who can protect this world from the invasion of other gods like Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon, and anyone who stands in his way must die. Seiya gets up and says that he will die then; Saga hits him, knocking him down.
History.
Ikki of the Phoenix awakens in the Temple of Virgo, and his armor is repaired by Shaka of Virgo when he blows on the ashes of his cloth. After this, he visits the temples of his injured friends and brother, who entrust him with the mission of protecting Athena (they revive later but never participate in the final outcome of the Twelve Temples). When he arrives at the Patriarch's Chamber, he observes a badly wounded Seiya, already in Saga's evil state. Here something interesting appears: Saga and Ikki have a duel of illusionists: the Genrōmaōken vs. the Phoenix Genma Ken, resulting in a draw. Since "mad Saga" didn't find it convenient to continue playing with his illusions, he uses Another Dimension against Ikki, but it doesn't work because the phoenix always returns. Since Saga already knew the precedent of the Phoenix always returning to life, he decides to annihilate him with his most powerful technique, the Galaxian Explosion. With the Galaxian Explosion, Saga seemingly kills the Phoenix, which seems true, but in the Poseidon Saga, the Phoenix inexplicably returns, as it did when he resurrected from the battle against the Black Saints. Returning to the battle, Seiya is also attacked by the Galaxian Explosion, but he remains alive, though near death. It is then that the unified cosmos of the secondary bronze Saints (Jabu, Ichi, etc.) and the Saints from all over the world, according to Jabu's words, finally help their friend, giving him new energy, with which Seiya is reborn and elevates his cosmos to the Seventh Sense and launches a definitive Pegasus Comet that "kills" Saga's evil side. Seiya then reaches Athena's shield, causing the arrow to disappear.
History.
Shortly after, Saga awakens and runs towards Athena. Here, Gemini apologizes for his sins and stabs himself in the heart, to Athena's sorrow, as she wished Saga to atone for his mistakes in life. Mu of Aries reflects, lamenting the "sick" state of his former comrade. After his suicide before Athena, Saga is resurrected along with Shion of Aries (former Patriarch), Camus of Aquarius, Shura of Capricorn, Deathmask of Cancer, and Aphrodite of Pisces for a period of 12 hours, with the objective of bringing Athena's head to Hades. After invading the entire Sanctuary, he appears in the first temple along with Camus and Shura, after Mu of Aries eliminated Deathmask and Aphrodite. Mu confronts Saga, Camus, and Shura, and is defeated, although Mu realizes that the hearts of Saga and the others are weeping. Shion asks Saga, Shura, and Camus to leave while he takes care of Mu. This, obviously, was only an attempt by his former master to protect Mu's life. Saga and the others pass through the Taurus temple, where a battle had taken place between Aldebaran of Taurus and the specter Niobe of Deep, in which both die. The resurrected Gold Saints feel sorrow for the fate of their comrade. Gemini, Aquarius, and Capricorn appear in the Gemini Temple. Camus and Shura advance towards the Cancer temple at Saga's request, as he would face his twin brother Kanon, who, after receiving Athena's forgiveness, is in charge of protecting the Gemini temple. Saga discovers that Camus and Shura are inside the illusion of the Gemini Labyrinth, and that Kanon is not in the temple, but is manipulating the Gemini Cloth remotely, attacking with a lightning bolt that crosses the remaining temples until it explodes in the Pope's Chamber, where Kanon was finally located. With this, the illusion disappears.
History.
Saga, Shura, and Camus enter the Cancer Temple, where they are again deceived by more illusions, this time from the underworld, which are produced by Shaka of Virgo. Saga destroys them with his Galaxian Explosion. After the insistence of the Saint of Virgo, Saga attacks Shaka from a distance, and Shaka counterattacks with his Tenma Kōfuku, destroying the Cancer temple and seemingly the three Golden Saints.
History.
Upon leaving the Cancer Temple, he secretly killed the Dullahan Spectre Cube and donned his surplice to cross the Leo Temple without Aioria of Leo intercepting him. However, Aioria senses a familiar cosmos and prepares to attack him, but is intercepted by Raimi of Worm, a situation that Saga and the others take advantage of to pass through the Temple.
History.
They then arrive at the Temple of Virgo, where Shaka appears and discovers the three former Golden Saints. Shaka defeats all the specters and confronts Saga, Shura, and Camus in the Garden of the Twin Suns of the Temple of Virgo, where he prepares to die. Shaka is attacked by Shura and Camus, although Shaka hits Shura and avoids Camus's attack. But then he receives Saga's Another Dimension, from which he manages to escape. Shaka attacks the three with the Tenbu Hōrin, a technique that can only be countered by performing the Athena Exclamation. Saga and the others hesitate to use it, while Shaka takes advantage of this by taking away their senses; finally they perform it, causing Shaka's death. Returning to the Temple of Virgo, they encounter Aiolia of Leo, Milo of Scorpio, and Mu of Aries, being attacked by Aiolia with his Lightning Plasma. Aiolia's second attempt is stopped by Saga with his hands, and then Milo hits each of them fourteen times with his Scarlet Needle. When he prepares to attack them with Antares, he receives Saga's Galaxian Explosion, which hits Milo, throwing him to the roof of the Temple of Virgo. Thanks to Seiya's warning, he doesn't receive the full force of the attack. Neither Milo, Aiolia, nor Mu understand how Saga, Shura, and Camus can still be alive without four of their five senses due to Shaka's attack, having received Aiolia's attack, and Milo's fourteen needles. Saga replies that they do everything for Athena. Saga, Shura, and Camus prepare to use the Athena Exclamation again, and Mu, Milo, and Aiolia counterattack with another. After this attack is directed towards the heavens by the Bronze Saints, Saga and the others are carried by Mu and the others to where Athena is, under her orders.
History.
Saga was brought before Athena by Mu of Aries. Upon reaching the Statue of Athena, he is greeted by Athena herself and his brother Kanon, who gives him a chest. Upon opening it, Saga discovers it is the same Golden Dagger he used to try and kill her as a baby thirteen years ago. Saga holds the dagger, and Saori, understanding the pain of the three former Golden Saints, approaches and takes it from him, then witnesses Athena commit suicide with the dagger. In Hades' Castle, he held Pandora captive along with Shura and Camus, telling her to take them to Hades. However, when bathed in the sunlight entering through the castle's roof, they lose their strength and are knocked down by Pandora. Pandora abandons the castle, leaving them on the floor with Zelos of Frog. When Zelos was beating Camus, the Bronze Saints arrive. Saga apologizes to Seiya for not being able to help in the battle that is just beginning. Then he entrusts Athena to Seiya and the others, and turns to dust after the time granted by Hades expires. In Hell, Saga reappears before the Wall of Lamentations, along with the other 11 Golden Saints. Merging with Kanon's soul, he orders the destruction of the Wall. Aiolos of Sagittarius combines the Cosmo of all the Golden Saints and they manage to project sunlight into the depths of Hades, thus destroying the wall at the cost of their lives, allowing the Bronze Saints to reach the Elysian Fields.
Techniques/Attacks
Galaxian Explosion: This consists of an explosion of energy spheres that the Gemini Saint releases from his hands. It is said to have the power to destroy stars and even the entire galaxy. Its impact is so devastating that it can completely obliterate them, leaving no trace. •Genrōmaōken: In the form of a punch, a lightning bolt is launched, piercing the opponent and sending a power surge that attacks the opponent's brain, controlling their mind. •Final Destiny: Creates thousands of energy spheres simulating a galaxy explosion, but in reality the thousands of spheres merge to create a single giant sphere that absorbs the opponent's energy before exploding. •Final Destination: Aspros launches a net of green energy that impacts the opponent, trapping them in a dimensional sphere that begins to compress while the victim loses their senses until their body is torn apart by the sphere's compression. • Another Dimension: Opens a rift in space to an empty dimension which, with great power, absorbs the opponent. •Arc Geminga: A small magnetic field is created in his right hand, taking the form of a dark sphere that begins to expand until it surpasses the size of Aspros himself. Then, he holds the sphere with both arms raised above his head and, when ready to attack, throws it at his opponent. Upon reaching its target, the dark sphere envelops the victim, trapping them in its core. From that moment on, the opponent begins to suffer intense pain as their body is slowly crushed and destroyed by the pressure of the magnetic field.
