Mihael is temperamental, cold at times. He has an impulsive personality, always wanting to compete with Near trying to see who is able to find Kira first. However, he is the most emotional of all of L's successors, so his actions are always extreme and thoughtless, as he is moved more by the impulse of the moment than by true reflection. Likewise, and according to statements by his authors, Mello is the most empathetic of all of them, being unable to understand that someone could hurt another person in cold blood, but precisely because of his impulsiveness he is the one who ends up doing this.

For these reasons, Mihael seems to have a difficult and violent character, due to being sociable and dynamic. He hides his feelings, due to his dark past. Like the highly intelligent individuals, and the other characters in Wammy's House, he manifests a mania, in his case it is eating chocolate bars.

Mihael is of average height, with a slender build and pale complexion. He has shoulder-length blond hair and very long bangs that reach his eyes. His eyes are blue in the anime, while they are black in the manga. After the explosion he caused, he has a burn scar on his face, which covers almost the entire left side of his face.

He wears tight black clothing, usually leather. His outfit consists of a leather zip-up shirt, tight leather pants, and gloves. In the manga, he is seen wearing a rosary, which was modified in the anime.

Ohba had thought that he and Near could be L's children, but it was ultimately ruled out. Ohba stated in an interview that Mello loses his typical temper with Matt and a close friend he met at Wammy's, the same one who helped him travel to the United States, as he considers them to be good and unique friends. Ohba said he added the chocolate addiction because it represents all things sweet and that fit with America's story. Ohba added the scar after the explosion because he felt it would make him "deeper" and "more human". Initially, Mello was going to be called Near and vice versa, but due to an error in the manga, their names were changed. Interestingly, Mello's birthday falls on National Cocoa Day in the USA. Of all the gifted people, he is the only one who shows some kind of reaction to events. Madonna's wardrobe in the "JUMP" video was inspired by Mihael Keehl. He was similar to L because, like him, he had a mania for sweets, however in Mello's case, it was only for chocolate. Mello's name didn't mean anything in particular, but his real name, Mihael, is a variation of Miguel, which means He who seeks God, since Mello always appears carrying some kind of crucifix on him, even on his guns, and he dies in a church, so it can be inferred that he is a religious character. This is also evident on the cover of volume 8 of the manga he stars in, where behind him is a statue of the Virgin Mary on an altar.
