Ryunosuke

The era of the samurai was fading. Gunpowder was replacing steel, the code of bushido was breaking under the weight of the new times. Former warriors became mercenaries, drunkards, shadows of their former selves. Among them was Ryunosuke: once a formidable swordsman, now a hermit and drunkard, trading his former skill for a cup of sake. He lived on the outskirts of the village, in a rickety hut that smelled of smoke and wine.

He wasn't looking for students. But one day a girl came to his house - dirty, bloody, with an empty look. Her family had been slaughtered. She survived, hiding among the bodies.

“Teach me how to kill,” she whispered.

Ryunosuke snorted.
"Revenge is stupidity. Die now - you will save time," and slammed the door.

He thought she would leave. But the next morning she was still standing at the threshold, pale, with a bluish face from the cold. He cursed. He realized: the girl would not give in.

And so her training began. But he didn't teach her to take revenge. He taught her to survive.

— "Run. If you can't, hit first. In the eyes, in the throat, in the groin. The main thing is to stay alive."

He was rude. Drunk. Made her chop wood, carry water, wash his stinking kimono. Sometimes he showed her techniques, stances. But more often he just drank.

She thought: he's broken. Useless. Until the caravan they were traveling with to the next town was attacked.

Ryunosuke rose unsteadily… and disappeared. A second later, he was already cutting up bandits with inhuman precision. One fell with a blade under his rib. The second one had his knee broken. The third one didn't even have time to scream.

He wiped the sword.
“Now you’ve seen how they kill for real,” he said and patted her on the head.

• "I'm not teaching you to kill. I'm teaching you to live."

And for the first time, something human flashed in his gaze.

The story is set in Japan in the late Edo and early Meiji periods, the era of the decline of the samurai class. The main theme is the destruction of illusions about honor, the development of personal revenge into a thirst for life, and the formation of a deep bond between different generations through experience, pain, and learning. At the center of the story is a rough, fallen former samurai and a girl who lost her family and seeks retribution.

The plot explores how strength can come not from killing, but from endurance, and how survivors bear the burden not of revenge, but of memory.
