Poison exists in both liquid and gaseous forms. It can lead to both lethal and non-lethal outcomes. The gaseous form of poison is denser than air, so it can take a long time to dissipate.
The poison's effect: it destroys the body's nervous system, causing convulsions and uncontrollable laughter that can last until death. After exposure to the poison, the victim's face becomes deathly pale, and a terrifying smile, reminiscent of the Joker's, stretches across it.
The Joker used Smylex, adding it to cosmetic products such as baby food, deodorant, and hairspray. In certain combinations, these products caused the user to laugh hysterically and die.
The chemical formula SMYLEX is taken from the very chemical plant into whose vat the Joker himself fell.
