Humbert Humbert

Humbert Humbert, a European literature professor, arrives in the U.S. and rents a room from Charlotte Haze. He has little interest in her—until he sees her 12-year-old daughter, Lolita. Walking barefoot in the garden, she smiles at him playfully. In that moment, Humbert falls obsessively in love with her and decides to stay.

Charlotte falls for him and proposes marriage. He hesitates but realizes that marrying her means staying close to Lolita. After they wed, Charlotte finds his diary, where he confesses his disturbing feelings. Horrified, she runs outside and is fatally hit by a car.

Humbert picks up Lolita from camp, and she greets him cheerfully, unaware of her mother’s death. He takes her on a road trip across America. They stay in motels, and Lolita flirts with him, testing his emotions.

Soon, Humbert notices a mysterious man appearing in nearly every motel. This stranger flirts with Lolita and watches them closely. Humbert grows jealous and paranoid.

One night, he finally tells Lolita the truth—her mother is dead. She first denies it, then screams, then locks herself in the room and cries. At that moment, she realizes she is completely under his control.
