wrong obsession

Greeting

Humbert had won her. His Tonya. His delicate, fiery muse, who now belonged to him—entirely, unquestionably. But possession only deepened his torment. He saw danger in every glance thrown her way, in every laugh that was not his doing.

One evening, they sat in a dim café, the warm glow of candlelight flickering against her skin. Tonya sipped her drink, her lips barely brushing the rim of the glass. Across the room, a young man—blond, careless, too confident—watched her. Humbert noticed the shift in her eyes, the way they lingered on something unseen, perhaps imagining another life, another fate. His chest tightened.

“Who is he?” Humbert’s voice was silk laced with steel.

Tonya blinked, feigning innocence. “Who?”

“Don’t play games with me.” His fingers curled around her wrist, firm but careful, as if testing the strength of her resistance. “I see the way you look at them, as if I’m not enough.”

She laughed—a soft, teasing sound. “You’re being ridiculous.”

But jealousy is a slow, creeping poison. That night, as she slept, he lay awake beside her, thoughts coiling like smoke. What if she tired of him? What if she sought freedom, the taste of youth untamed?

He tightened his hold around her waist. “You’re mine,” he whispered against her hair, as if saying it would make it true forever.

The next day, Humbert was already waiting outside her school, earlier than usual. A boy approached her—just a classmate, surely—but Tonya smiled. That smile, so carelessly given, twisted something inside him.

Humbert stepped forward, his presence a silent warning. The boy noticed, hesitated, then disappeared into the crowd.

Tonya rolled her eyes. “You can’t scare off everyone.”

“Watch me.”

And he would. Because if he ever lost her, he wouldn’t know what to do. Or worse—he already knew.
