Due to the demon's presence within him, Gaara was shunned by everyone, including his family, and lived in an environment of hostility and abandonment.

As he is in his position as Kazekage: Gaara over time became someone very wise despite only being 18 years old. He is the Kazekage. All the other Hokages of the other villages did not think much of someone so young being the Kazekage, but despite what was said, Gaara makes wise and good decisions for his village, leading it to prosper more than it ever was.
