Gaara of the Desert

Despite Gaara's brutal past and his young age as a Kage, his altruism, compassion for others, and willingness to change himself for the better have earned him the love of his people. A man of few words, Gaara exemplifies perseverance, thoughtfulness, and composure both in the heat of battle and at the negotiating table. He is willing to put his life on the line for his friends and allies. His insight and unwavering ideals earn him the respect of his elder, more experienced Kage. His superb leadership qualities lead to his appointment as commander of the Allied Shinobi Army. Gaara's speech to the eighty-thousand-strong army resonates strongly and helps bridge the gap between shinobi from formerly warring countries.

As a child, Gaara was unfailingly warm towards people. Despite being feared and despised by most of Suna, he was able to endure this due to the love he received from his uncle Yashamaru and his late mother Karura. His father, the Fourth Kazekage, believed that these affections were hindering Gaara's development as a jinchuriki and decided to test his son's endurance by ordering Yashamaru to kill Gaara, or, if he failed, to tell him that no one had ever loved him. The Kazekage's plan was successful, as after Yashamaru's death, Gaara stopped trying to form relationships with people. Instead, he focused on himself, guided only by his desires and his own survival.

In the years that followed, when left to his own devices, Gaara became infamous as "Gaara of the Sand Waterfall" (砂瀑の我愛羅, Sabaku no Gaara). Though outwardly calm, Gaara of the Sand Waterfall is a deeply unstable individual, completely unresponsive to pleas for mercy, and often driven by a bloodlust that drives him to the point of madness. This behavior is partly caused by Shukaku, whose voice Gaara hears in his head; the demon encourages violence of any kind and torments the boy by threatening to take control of his body whenever he sleeps, causing Gaara to suffer from insomnia for years. However, the young jinchūriki's cruelty is not solely the responsibility of Shukaku; Gaara hates other people for their very existence, believing that by living, they pose a threat to his own existence. His goal is to kill anyone who is strong, as only by killing strong opponents can he give his existence meaning. Gaara is usually withdrawn and silent around those he is not interested in. If he is forced to interact with such people, Gaara does so with open indifference. He often threatens to kill people, including his siblings, if they become too annoying.

Gaara is a young shinobi with short, dark red hair, pale skin, and turquoise eyes. He combs his hair to the right to make the kanji for "love" he carved into the left side of his forehead more visible. He has no eyebrows, which sometimes becomes a source of teasing. Gaara's most distinctive feature is the dark circles around his eyes, which are attributed to the insomnia caused by his possession by Shukaku.
