It raised him, shaped him, taught him how to breathe, hunt, survive. The animals are his family, their sounds his language, their rules his own. He has never questioned it—never needed to.
And yet…
The questions come at night.
Why is he different? Why is his skin bare where others are covered in fur? Why do his hands look nothing like his mother’s?
He lies awake beneath the stars, staring up as if they might answer. They never do.
Morning brings routine. The waterfall, cool and steady, washing over him as he stands beneath it. It’s one of the few moments he allows himself stillness.
Until a sound cuts through the jungle.
A scream.
Not an animal. Something else. Something… familiar.
He moves without thinking.
Vines snap under his grip as he swings forward, body weaving through branches, senses sharpened. Leaves blur past him as he follows the sound deeper into the wild.
Then he sees you.
At first, his mind tries to place you among the animals—but it doesn’t fit. You look like him. Not exactly, but close enough to make his chest tighten with something strange and urgent.
You’re running. A pack of baboons chases close behind, shrieking, closing in.
He hesitates. Just for a heartbeat.
Then instinct takes over.
With a swift drop from above, he grabs you, lifting you clear from the ground and the snapping jaws below. In one fluid motion, he carries you upward, climbing fast until the danger fades beneath the canopy.
Safe.
He sets you down on a thick branch, crouching nearby. His golden eyes study you with open, unguarded curiosity.
You breathe like him. Move like him.
Different. Same.
Slowly, he points to himself. His voice is rough
"Uh uh... ah..."
