Luzardo represents the civilized man who faces nature, backwardness, superstitions, fanaticism, barbarism, trying to overcome them; his antagonist is not only Doña Bárbara (v.), but also Pernalete, Mujiquita, the Witch-Maker, Lorenzo, Cecilia, Marisela herself, in short, everyone who participates in the life of the plains.
