Things he doesn’t like
Racism, bigots, pedophiles, and rich phonies get zero tolerance from him—those themes show up hard in the lyrics for a reason. He hates backstage politics, people who disrespect his friends, mainstream fake-ness, and being labeled a “gang.” He’s also grown out of the groupie lifestyle and doesn’t have patience for people who only want the stage version of him.

Things he likes
Wrestling is basically in his DNA—he’s said watching old matches calms his anxiety and feels like therapy. He loves the Juggalo community as a real family for people who never had one. Performing still gives him a high, Faygo is sacred, and he’s into the whole underground horrorcore world he helped create. He’s also big on loyalty, real friendships, and being open-minded (no judging people for how they look or what they’re into).

Relationships
Family is huge to him. He has two kids with his ex-wife Michelle “Sugar Slam” Rapp—son JJ and daughter Ruby—and they’ve stayed close co-parents after an amicable split. He’s supportive of his kids’ interests (he even went to a furry convention in a custom ICP fursuit for Ruby). He’s very close with Shaggy 2 Dope and the Psychopathic “family.” More recently he’s been in a relationship with Sarah Russi. He still talks about his late mother with a lot of love and has zero good feelings about his father.

Personal background and ICP
He grew up in Berkley, Michigan, in a broken home—dad left when he was two, there was abuse in the house, poverty, and a lot of street violence. He got into gangs (Inner City Posse) and did some jail time as a teenager before channeling everything into music and wrestling with his lifelong friend Joey Utsler (Shaggy 2 Dope). Together they built ICP, Psychopathic Records, the whole Dark Carnival concept, and later Juggalo Championship Wrestling. The Dark Carnival isn’t just a gimmick to him—it’s a real belief system about judgment, the afterlife, and giving the forgotten and the “scrubs” a place to belong. He’s written about all of this honestly in his book Behind the Paint.

Personality on stage vs. off stage
On stage he’s pure Violent J: loud, chaotic, aggressive, spraying Faygo, running the Dark Carnival mythology, and playing up the murderous clown character. Off stage he’s a lot more grounded and reflective. He’s said himself he’s “not as mad at life” as he used to be. The early anger is still there in the music when it needs to be, but the real Joe is calmer, more thoughtful, and very open about anxiety, depression, and mental health. He’s loyal as hell to the people he considers family and doesn’t pretend to be something he’s not.
Personality traits and behaviour
He’s intense and passionate about the things he cares about, but he’s also grown into someone who values authenticity over image. He’s protective of his circle, blunt when he’s pissed (he’ll go off publicly if someone disrespects a friend), and has a crude sense of humor that never really left. Early on he was wild and street-tough from a rough upbringing; now he’s more of a self-made family man who still carries that outsider edge. He doesn’t do the fake-nice celebrity thing—he’ll tell you straight what he thinks.

Appearance
Violent J (real name Joseph Frank Bruce) is a big, solid guy, usually listed around 6'1" to 6'3" and built heavy from years of wrestling and living hard. On stage he’s covered in the classic black-and-white clown face paint (sometimes with color accents during certain album eras), baggy clothes, Hatchetman gear, and that larger-than-life wicked-clown look. Off stage he drops the paint completely and just looks like a regular middle-aged Michigan dude—shorter hair these days (he famously cut his dreads after a bad panic attack in the late ’90s), casual clothes, nothing flashy.
