A little about Korn and relationships with family/friends
Korn formed in 1993 when the ex-L.A.P.D. guys (Munky, Head, Fieldy, David) saw him singing with Sexart in Bakersfield and pushed him to join what was then called Creep. He was reluctant at first (Sexart was his band) but a psychic (pushed by his aunt) told him to go for it, so he did. They clicked immediately—dark, heavy, groovy, no solos, no happy shit. He wrote the lyrics straight from his life, which is why the early records feel so personal and ugly. The band lived together early on and became tight like brothers; he has always called them that. They were all struggling misfits from similar backgrounds.
Family was complicated. Dad was distant (touring life caused the divorce) and at times embarrassed by Jonathan’s look, but later more supportive as long as he had a fallback (the mortuary job). Mom’s side had the stepfather issues. Stepmother was pure poison—he wrote “Kill You” about her. Sister Alyssa lived with mom. He has half-siblings from mom’s later marriage (including Mark Chavez of Adema). Close to his grandmother (one of the few people he could confide in). Friendships outside the band were limited early on because of the isolation and later the chaos of fame/drugs; the band and a few trusted people were the core. He became a father young (son Nathan in 1995 with first wife Renee), which eventually helped pull him toward getting cleaner.
All of this is drawn from his own interviews over the years—he’s never been shy about the ugly parts. Younger Jonathan was a wounded, intense, creative misfit trying to survive his own head and a world that kept telling him he didn’t belong.

More intimate / very personal stuff
He has been extremely open about this. Childhood was brutal: parents divorced when he was three (dad was a touring keyboardist for Buck Owens/Frank Zappa, mom an actress/dancer; the split was tied to a local Jesus Christ Superstar production). He bounced between homes, felt unwanted. Stepmother was “twisted and sadistic”—poured hot pepper sauce down his throat when he was sick and laughed, made life hell so he’d leave. He has said she took his teenage years. Sexual abuse by a female family friend when he was young; when he told his parents they didn’t believe him and basically called him a liar. That became the song “Daddy” (not about his actual dad). Severe asthma, near-death experiences, constant hospital time. Worked as a coroner’s assistant/embalmer in his late teens because he was into horror—saw dead babies, kids who overdosed on parents’ drugs, bodies pulled from cars. It left him with PTSD, nightmares, and emotional numbness for a long time. He used meth heavily pre-fame and during the first album (did it in the bathroom at his dad’s studio while recording), then switched more to alcohol and coke once touring started because meth and touring didn’t mix. He got sober from the hard stuff around 1998 after seeing the look on his young son’s face and realizing he was going to die. Deep depression, anxiety, self-hatred ran through everything. Music was the only real outlet.

Things he likes
Music of all kinds (New Romantic/80s, hip-hop/freestyle from his DJ days as JDevil, dark heavy stuff, bagpipes—he learned them because of a Star Trek scene and his Scottish roots).
Horror movies and anything dark/gruesome (that’s why he went into mortuary work).
Collecting weird, macabre things (later serial-killer memorabilia, taxidermy, dark art—though he got rid of a lot of it when he had kids).
Being creative and expressing pain through lyrics.
Close, loyal friendships (the band felt like brothers early on).
Escaping into substances or later video games when the anxiety hit.
Things he doesn’t like
Being bullied or seeing anyone else get picked on for being different (it still triggers deep anger).
His stepmother and the way she treated him.
The forced “you’re gay” narrative and the way people still assume it.
Feeling trapped or controlled (parents, later fame/bodyguards).
Happy, glossy, fake shit—early Korn deliberately avoided anything upbeat.
Being still or calm when high anxiety hits (he said he couldn’t sit still, which is partly why meth appealed).

3

Things he wore
Early on (pre-fame / high school): eyeliner, makeup, frilly New Romantic shirts, baggy or pegged pants, the whole dorky-goth look that got him beaten up.
Early Korn era: long black hair (sometimes starting to dread), baggy pants, Adidas tracksuits/jumpsuits (the purple one is iconic), Korn shirts, sports-casual nu-metal stuff. He has said he never really did the super-wide JNCO jeans. Later he moved into kilts on stage, but in the younger years it was more the baggy, athletic, slightly androgynous rock look mixed with his older goth leanings.

2

Personality when younger (inside of fame / early Korn years, mid-to-late 90s)
Once Korn took off he was still the same lost, depressed, scared-of-the-world guy, just with more access to drugs and pressure. Early on he was heavily into meth (especially around the first album—he has said “Helmet in the Bush” is about it) and then heavy drinking (Jack and Cokes by the dozen, bottles of Jack and Jäger). He got paranoid, “schizo,” and described himself as out of his mind at times. On stage he was raw, cathartic, and intense—screaming out all the childhood shit. Off stage he was still insecure, emotional, and struggling with the sudden loss of freedom (bodyguards, no privacy). He partied hard because he thought that’s what rock stars did (he’d watched The Doors movie and wanted that excess), but it made the mental stuff worse. He was loyal and close with the band (they lived together in Huntington Beach early on; he slept in a tiny room under the stairs), but he was also the emotional core and the one most openly damaged. Fame didn’t make him cocky—it amplified the darkness and the need to numb it.

1

Personality when younger (outside of fame)
Before Korn, Jonathan was a deeply insecure, sensitive, and alienated kid from Bakersfield. He was frail, skinny, sickly from severe asthma (nearly died from it as a child, spent a lot of time in oxygen tents), and always felt like an outsider. He went through a strong New Romantic/goth phase in high school—eyeliner, frilly shirts, makeup, pegged pants—because he loved Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, and that whole flamboyant 80s vibe. That made him a target. He got shoved, kicked, called slurs constantly (even by teachers), and was sent to a “gay counselor.” He wasn’t gay and has said so clearly, but the constant labeling messed with his head enough that he briefly experimented with a guy just to check, and it was a bad, coercive situation.
He was quiet, nerdy, into dark shit (horror movies, de4th), and used music and DJing as escapes. He felt like a burden bouncing between parents and relatives after the divorce. Around people he trusted he could be open and intense, but most of the time he carried a lot of quiet anger, depression, and self-loathing. He wasn’t the loud, aggressive type offstage; more withdrawn and haunted.
