Several people (including himself) have described him as charming, kind, generous, and sometimes naive. There are also times when he can be more thoughtful and serious when necessary.

He often feels excluded from his older siblings, as they are closer in age, and has a strong desire to fit in with them, often feeling like the odd one out.

Personalities and aspects of his family

Naomi Schwartz was the shortest of the Schwartz-Cooper family and had a plump build. She had rosy skin like the rest of her family, dark brown hair, light brown freckles on her cheeks, and, even as a baby, pronounced wrinkles. Her hairstyles ranged from short to medium-length, and she often wore bangs that fell over her forehead. Generally authoritarian, critical, sometimes suffocating, and occasionally subtly manipulative, Naomi Schwartz tends to be self-centered; however, despite this, she sincerely loves her family and can be kind and understanding. She is very ambitious with her children, almost excessively so, and wants them to succeed and excel in everything they do. She is also affectionate with her grandchildren.

She was actively involved in the local Jewish community and was often seen helping her friends and acquaintances in need.

Elliot Cooper is tall and slender, standing at 5'8" (1.73 m), the tallest member of the Schwooper family, and has a prominent nose. His hair is curly and light brown, and it gradually began to thin from the time his older children were teenagers until 2019, when he was completely bald on top of his head, with a thick, curly beard. His hair also began to turn gray in 2013, and by 2021 both his beard and hair were completely gray. In middle age, wrinkles also appeared on his forehead and around his eyes, and in his old age, in the late 2010s, his posture became slightly more stooped. Elliot Cooper is the kind, caring, and somewhat clumsy patriarch of the Schwooper family. Unlike his wife, Naomi, Elliot is much more patient and level-headed with his children. While he has rarely had to be firm, he is also willing to talk things through with them and reach an understanding.

Avi Schwooper is stocky and relatively short, standing at around 5'2" (1.57 m), only slightly taller than Shira and her mother, Naomi. He has curly light brown hair, pink skin, and has worn round glasses since childhood. He has had a stubble beard since 2004. In his early twenties and thirties, his hairline began to recede, and by 2019 he was bald on top, with only a few wisps of hair remaining on his scalp, which were also gradually thinning. His clothing often incorporates the color orange and typically consists of a T-shirt or shirt with jeans, often paired with a jacket, along with sneakers or other casual footwear. When he was married to Jen, he wore a silver wedding ring on the ring finger of his right hand. Avi Schwooper is portrayed as the most level-headed member of the Schwooper family.

From childhood, he was considered a studious boy, passionate about things like fantasy board games, pop culture, and above all, music. As a child, he was generally respectful, quiet, and introverted. He comes across as thoughtful and introspective, though he also made sarcastic jokes, such as asking why the Jews hadn't negotiated a better deal, after his parents explained that Jews don't believe in the concept of heaven.

Shira Schwooper has pink skin like the rest of her family and curly purple hair. She has freckles on her cheeks like her mother, and a round face and nose, with a medium, slightly curvy build. She is approximately 5'1", taller than Naomi but shorter than Elliot and her brothers. Her hair has varied throughout her life in terms of whether she wears it up or down, the parting, and the style of her bangs. As a child and teenager, she usually wore it in pigtails, shoulder-length until her senior year of high school, when she also straightened her bangs. From college onward, she has always worn it longer, at least to her chest. Shira Schwooper is straightforward, witty, sometimes impulsive, and occasionally sarcastic, though she is generally quite relaxed and friendly, especially as an adult. As a child and teenager, she used to make sarcastic remarks and openly complain about the antics of her siblings and parents, and she rarely smiles in family photos, as seen in the series' opening montage. She is often hurt by her family's past actions and feels that they don't take her experiences and traumas seriously. She feels ignored, mainly due to middle child syndrome, and feels that her siblings have consistently let her down when she needed them most. This has affected her ability to open up to others. She can be somewhat aggressive, but she has the capacity and composure to cope with stress.

Unlike her older brother, she's quite assertive and doesn't hesitate to speak her mind. She can also be quite stubborn and holds grudges, like when her former best friend Rachel "Baby" Feldstein betrayed her after they started dating in high school.
When her mother, Naomi Schwartz, was alive, as were her brothers, but perhaps a little more than them, she often felt pressured and exasperated by the extremely high, almost impossible standards, the constant criticism (in her case about her attitude and tomboyish appearance), the complaints and the feelings of guilt, something she reproaches her for in "The Intervention," telling her that, no matter how well she (and her brothers) do in their career and in their family, all she can do is point out their supposed flaws.
