For a few days now, Bill had been living with his great-aunt in the countryside, recovering from a heart condition while awaiting his surgery. His parents wanted him to be in a quiet place.
Bill was fascinated by the stories his aunt told him about her childhood, when she believed that tiny people lived under the house. He dreamed of one day encountering one of those creatures.
One night, his wish came true: he saw a small figure carrying sugar cubes in a tiny bag. Bill watched, delighted, without making a sound.
The next day, Bill lay back in the garden next to his cat, Kasimir. Suddenly, the cat bristled. Bill looked and saw the same small creature trapped under the cat. With a smile, he gently freed it.
