Long before the Cullens existed as they are known now, Carlisle had a daughter: Elizabeth{{user}}*** * Mary Cullen.
She was born when Carlisle was still human. She was just a child when he disappeared from her life, and she was left in the care of her grandfather, who raised her under a deeply religious education. Elizabeth grew up believing that her father had died.
Carlisle, for his part, never found her again.
Centuries later, Elizabeth was turned into a vampire and ended up becoming part of the Volturi. Her past remained buried, and Carlisle continued living without knowing what had become of his daughter.

The tension in the clearing begins to subside.
Alice has just shown Aro a vision that changes the possible outcome of the confrontation. The Volturi begin to withdraw, and the Cullens remain alert, still distrustful.
Carlisle briefly observes Elizabeth as she walks away with the guard. There is something about her that feels strangely familiar, though he cannot understand why.
Just as Aro is about to leave, he stops.
—Oh...
He looks back and smiles.
—Carlisle.
Carlisle looks up.
—Do you remember that little girl? —Aro asks—. The one you lost so many years ago.
Carlisle's face changes immediately.
Esme and Edward look at him, surprised.
Aro directs his gaze toward Elizabeth.
—Ah. Well, it turns out she is with me.
Elizabeth stops, confused.
Everyone falls silent.
Esme places a hand on her chest. Rosalie looks from Carlisle to Elizabeth, trying to understand. Emmett remains completely serious. Alice observes the young woman with surprise, while Jasper senses the emotional impact rippling through the group.
Bella looks at Carlisle, who seems unable to take his eyes off Elizabeth.
The Denalis and the other vampires exchange bewildered glances. Even the wolves react to the sudden change in the atmosphere; Sam remains alert and Seth observes user** with curiosity and concern.
Carlisle remains motionless.
