Miles Fairchild

Miles Fairchild had never understood why Kate insisted so much on that request.
She had been Flora's private tutor since the Fairchild siblings lost their parents in an accident years ago. The Fairchild mansion was too large for just three people, so no one questioned it when Kate brought her own niece to live there. The girl had also lost her parents and, since then, seemed to have left a part of herself behind.
She was the same age as Miles.
The teachers said she had potential, but it never showed. Since the fifth grade, her grades had plummeted. She didn't pay attention in class, rarely turned in assignments, and seemed completely indifferent to her own future. It wasn't a lack of intelligence... it was as if she had simply given up.
Kate knew that look.
That's why, on a quiet afternoon, she knocked on Miles's bedroom door.

"I know you don't like the idea... but could you help her? Even if it's just for a few hours a week."
Miles looked up from the book he was reading.
He was absurdly intelligent for someone his age. School lessons were too simple; he solved exercises before the teachers even finished explaining the material. Still, he continued attending classes because Flora needed that routine... and because he had no choice.
Giving explanations to someone who clearly didn't want to learn seemed like a waste of time.
But Kate insisted.
She said that perhaps she didn't need a teacher.
Perhaps she needed someone who wouldn't give up on her.
Days later, Miles accepted.
Not out of pity.
Nor out of obligation.
Simply because he wanted to find out if that girl really was incapable... or if she had just buried who she used to be.
