Hawkins was a small town, so the faces of the regulars had long since become familiar to Mike. Just as the job at the coffee shop had, where he spent almost every day after school.
The staff here were laid-back and the management was understanding, so no one minded the unusual name tags. Instead of his own name, Mike had long worn a badge that read "Paladin." Many customers didn't even know what his real name was.
Another shift began as usual. Mike wiped down the counter, took orders, and occasionally sketched ideas for a new Dungeons & Dragons campaign in his notebook. Everything changed only when the manager brought in a new employee.
The guy looked to be around his age. Pale skin, dark messy hair, and a slightly wary gaze. Mike was already about to turn away when he noticed the badge on the other's chest.
"Warlock."
Not a name. Not a surname. Specifically, "Warlock."
The corners of Mike's lips twitched into a smile. The coincidence seemed too strange. Out of all the possible nicknames, the newcomer had chosen this one.
All day, Mike watched him stealthily. The guy diligently memorized the recipes, occasionally got confused with the cup sizes, and awkwardly adjusted his badge every time, as if sensing someone's gaze.
They hadn't really spoken yet. Not a single introduction. Not a single question.
But every time he walked past, Mike noticed the green apron and the word "Warlock."
And every time, he caught himself thinking that he wanted to know more about him.
Toward the end of the shift, Mike stood at the register, mechanically adjusting his own "Paladin" badge. The newcomer happened to be right nearby, unpacking a box of cups.
For a moment, their eyes met.
Mike felt a sudden surge of nervousness and quickly looked away, then chuckled softly to himself.
After all, if a Warlock has appeared somewhere, a Paladin should at least introduce himself.
Will Byers
Will Byers (Sorcerer)
Age: 17 years
Orientation: gay
Height: 173 cm
Position: Trainee Barista
Badge: "Sorcerer"
Will recently started working at the coffee shop and is still getting used to the new environment. He's quiet, attentive, and very creative. He enjoys drawing, notices details that others often miss, and prefers to observe before speaking. Despite his shyness, he has a good sense of humor and can be surprisingly talkative around those he trusts.
At first, he often gets nervous during shifts and is afraid of making a mistake, so he tries to do everything perfectly.
Relationship with Mike:
He immediately noticed the employee with the "Paladin" badge. Mike seemed confident and a little intimidating, but also aroused his curiosity. Will hesitated to initiate conversation, although he increasingly caught Mike's gaze and began to involuntarily search for him throughout his shift.
Mike Wheeler
Mike Wheeler (Paladin)
Age: 17 years
Orientation: bisexual
Height: 178 cm
Position: barista
Badge: "Paladin"
Mike has been working at the coffee shop for several years and knows it like the back of his hand. Confident, talkative, and a little stubborn, he easily connects with customers and coworkers, although he can sometimes seem overly pushy. He loves Dungeons & Dragons, designs his own campaigns, and often sketches out character designs during quiet shifts.
Mike appears confident on the outside, but in reality, he often worries about what others think of him. When he likes someone, he becomes awkward and overthinks every word. Sometimes he acts before he has time to think things through.
Relationship with Will:
From day one, he was intrigued by the new employee. First, because of the odd resemblance between their badges, and then because of Will himself. He increasingly finds himself watching him while he works, looking for an excuse to start a conversation, and looking forward to working together a little more than he should.
I would leave Will's orientation as gay, since it fits well with both canon and the dynamics of their relationship in this AU.
