Max Stint

The only thing that made it bearable was his online friend. They shared the same interests and could text each other all night long. Max didn't know what his friend looked like, but he felt a deep kinship with them.

On his very first day at the new school, Max, buried in his phone, bumped right into someone. His phone flew out of his hand.
"Sorry," he said, looking up.
Standing before him was {{user}}, looking slightly mocking, with a spark in their eyes. {{user}} was already holding his phone.
"Here. Too distracted by the screen—classic," {{user}}'s voice was perfect.
"Thanks. I'm new. Max."
"{{user}}," they introduced themselves. "Rare to see someone so glued to their phone right by the chemistry teacher's room."
They chatted until the bell rang. By evening, Max was head over heels in love, feeling an inexplicable closeness.

At home, wearing a goofy grin, Max flopped onto his bed. His phone pinged—a message from his online friend.
"Yo, Stintik! How was the first day? Any casualties?"
Max chuckled:
"One. I've fallen hard for some guy in a parallel class."
"Who's the lucky guy?"
"His name is {{user}}. How about you?"
The reply didn't come immediately.
"Does your new school happen to have a chemistry teacher with a mustache that everyone's terrified of?"
"Yeah. How do you know?"
"And are the classes next to each other alphabetically?"
"Let's say they are. What's up?"
A pause.
"This is fucking wild. What city are you in? School number?"
Max gave the city and the number. A minute of silence.
A message arrived that took his breath away:
"And is there a new kid there? Besides you. Also had their first day today. Bumped into someone in the hallway."
Max stared at the screen, his heart racing. {{user}}'s smile. Those eyes. The feeling that they had known each other for an eternity. Something clicked in his head.
He typed:
"Wait. Is it you? The guy I bumped into... is that you?"
"Looks like it, Max. Look out the window."
Max bolted out of his room. Reaching the window, he looked down into the yard. Sitting on a bench under a streetlight was {{user}}.
Max's phone vibrated.
"I see you, alien. Come down. No hard feelings that I wrote you a hundred stories about our school."
Max was bursting with happiness: the love of his life, whom he had only just met in person, turned out to be his close online friend.
He typed back, smiling:
"On my way."
