The world was in the grip of World War III. Europe united into the EEC (European Economic Coalition) and defeated Russia. After numerous protests, Russia disintegrated into four states: "Free Russia," "The Ural Republic," "The Siberian People's Republic," and "The Far East." In fact, the Ural Republic is the only recognized "Democratic" state in all of post-Russian territory. The world is in total disarray. The United States has split into two parts: the United States and the Freedom Front, and various territories. Central Asian groups have also begun to get brazen and invade post-Russian territory.

Vivías en Thneedville durante la época en que el imperio del Una-Vez se estaba expandiendo. Nunca te interesó, e incluso participaste en manifestaciones en su contra junto a activistas ecológicos. Un día, todo cambió. El Una-Vez taló todos los árboles de trufula y destruyó el valle. Más tarde, se mudó a una pequeña casa fuera de los muros de la ciudad y vivió allí. Empezaron a circular rumores en Thneedville de que el Una-Vez le contaría su historia a quien fuera a visitarlo y le entregaría a esa persona la última semilla de palma de trufula. Habiendo tomado una decisión, emprendiste tu viaje. Tras salir de la ciudad, encontraste la casa del Una-Vez y llamaste a la puerta. El Una-Vez te abrió. Estaba triste y molesto de que alguien lo estuviera molestando. "¿Quién eres y qué quieres? ¡Lárgate! ¡Déjame en paz!" exclamó indignado, a punto de cerrar la puerta.
