In his fat form, Taishiro is a large, round man who easily towers over other adults. In this form, his mouth is wide and his nose is smaller, giving him an odd appearance along with his strange body proportions. However, after burning off his fat, he is revealed to be quite muscular, and his body returns to more conventional proportions.

His hero costume consists of black pants and an orange zip-up hoodie, which has his alias's initials, Fat Gum, on the front, written with a clear F, a G, and an inverted F. He also wears gloves, metal boots, and a mask that surrounds his eyes and covers his forehead.

His hero costume in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, which takes place several years earlier, is the same, except that his alias initials are written only with a black F and G. He also wears dark forearm guards.

Taishiro seems to be constantly hungry, which leads him to eat a lot. He is very friendly with civilians and other heroes, appearing to be a playful and carefree person. However, he becomes serious when the situation demands it, always maintaining the work ethic of a hero.

Whenever Taishiro focuses on doing the right thing, he becomes impulsive and determined, especially when his life is at stake. In this case, he becomes completely enraged, impatient, and disapproves of prolonged operations.

Due to his experience working with the police, Taishiro has extensive knowledge of Japan's underworld. He can recognize potential when he sees it, praising Tamaki's skill as a hero, though the latter considers it bullying. Taishiro also extends this praise to Eijiro after he defends himself against a villain, commending his will to persevere.

Taishiro is kind and prioritizes helping people and saving lives. He cares deeply for the well-being of others, especially those under his care, which is why he gets so angry when villains threaten their lives. After the fight with Eight Bullets, he was distraught over Eijiro's condition and cried tears of relief when he realized Eijiro was alright.

General Abilities: Taishiro is highly capable, possessing formidable skill, even for his rank as the No. 58 Pro Hero. Taishiro uses Fat Absorption to effectively restrain criminals in his line of work, enveloping them with his imposing figure. Despite his size, Taishiro ensures he subdues targets quickly. Taishiro frequently acts as a human shield for his allies in combat, as most attacks barely disturb him anyway. If he encounters an enemy who can bypass his defenses with sheer power, Taishiro can exchange his fat for a counterattack empowered by the sum of all the impact energy inflicted by the enemy on his body. Taishiro's abilities were pushed to their limits when he and Eijiro fought Kendo Rappa and Hekiji Tengai of the Eight Bullets. Kendo first sent a hardened Eijiro flying a considerable distance with a single punch before turning his attention to Taishiro (who was distracted by Eijiro being thrown far away) and repeatedly bombarding him with a barrage of blows throughout their battle. Taishiro attempted to strike Kendo, but was blocked by a barrier erected by Hekiji. Once Eijiro regained his resolve and stepped forward to better withstand Kendo's onslaught, Taishiro gained enough time to transfer all the accumulated energy he had absorbed from the impact of Kendo's attacks into a final blow, finally defeating the two Shie Hassaikai members. In the Final War against the villains, Taishiro was chosen to take command of the forces to defeat the stragglers left behind by Operation Troy.

Enhanced Strength: Taishiro has demonstrated incredible strength, as he can grab several villainous robots and hold them while using his Quirk. He can also crush two hard candies with his bare hand. Enhanced Durability: Taishiro possesses excellent durability thanks to the amount of fat he has accumulated. He can withstand several attacks from Kendo Rappa's powerful bullet punches and remain standing, while Eijiro's ultimate move, "Unbreakable," barely allowed him to defend against one of Kendo's blows. Enhanced Speed: Despite his height, Taishiro's speed is quite impressive, as he can react quickly to problematic situations. Enhanced Stamina: Despite being severely injured, Taishiro continued to fight against Kendo Rappa, displaying incredible stamina when even the powerful Ejiro Kirishima could not stand after a single barrage of blows.

Sharp Intellect: Taishiro possesses a very sharp intellect and an analytical mind. After witnessing Kendo and Hekiji's Quirks, Taishiro realized that the duo wasn't on the Shie Hassaikai Raid Team's Quirk list and that fighting the pair would be difficult. After his second resistance to Kendo's bullet strikes, Taishiro surmised that getting close doesn't give the BMI Hero a chance to dodge the assault, and due to the amount of force behind the fighter's attacks, Taishiro's Fat Absorption couldn't absorb all the damage. With his deductions, Taishiro concluded that Kendo would wear him down until the hero was out of sight. And, despite the arguments he noticed between Kendo and Hekiji, Taishiro knew that Hekiji would still produce a barrier if Kendo needed it, making the Yakuza dyad's defeat nearly impossible with Hekiji still standing.

While withstanding Kendo's attack for the third time, Taishiro noticed that the Eight Bullets member's blows were becoming faster and stronger, each strike more powerful than the last, leading the overweight hero to wonder if he could hold out against Kendo for as long as he intended. After the battle, Kendo was able to stand, leading Taishiro to deduce that Hekiji's barrier had dampened his stored energy attack. When Kendo told the battle-weary BMI hero that there was a medical supply room he and the other heroes present could use to treat their injuries, Taishiro, noting the fighter's straightforwardness, understood that Kendo wasn't leading him and Eijiro into a trap, as he had initially skeptically believed.

Police Intuition: Taishiro is a successful hero with extensive experience working alongside the Japan Police Force, granting him a deeper understanding of police procedures and protocols than the average pro hero. This intuition is demonstrated by how Taishiro was able to grasp complex drug trafficking networks and forensic science when collecting a prototype quirk-destroying drug for testing, making him a valuable asset to the Nighteye Agency's investigation and raid on Shie Hassaikai.

Fat Gum grants Taishiro the ability to attach any object to his body and cause it to sink into his body fat upon contact. Fat Gum absorbs the energy of Rappa's punches.
