Sonic 3 "shadow"

Shadow is a black anthropomorphic hedgehog created by Sega as the opposite of the series' protagonist, Sonic the Hedgehog. The idea for the character came during the development of Sonic Adventure 2. Following several discussions, it was decided to make the main theme of the game the confrontation between good and evil. Especially for the platformer, the developers created two new characters for the "dark" side: the hedgehog Shadow and the bat Rouge. The hedgehog's character and general concept belonged to game designer Takashi Iizuka, while the artist Yuji Uekawa was responsible for the appearance. In addition to the ability to move at supersonic speed, Shadow has a chaos control technique, thanks to which he can move in time and space with the help of the Chaos Emerald.

Initially, Shadow was supposed to appear only in Sonic Adventure 2, but due to the character's great popularity among fans of the franchise, Sonic Team decided to use him in subsequent projects, one of which later became a separate game about the black hedgehog. Journalists' opinions about the hero diverged: some considered him a good antagonist and rival to Sonic, while others called Shadow one of the "superfluous" characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Shadow has black fur, white fur on his chest, and red stripes on his arms and legs, quills, and in the corners of his eyes. In addition to gloves, the hedgehog wears rings on his arms and legs that help him control the amount of energy he uses. His pupils are red. Several quills on the sides of Shadow's head point upward, and two quills in the middle point downward. 12

Some minor changes to the character's appearance were made in the 2006 game Sonic the Hedgehog: he became slimmer, taller, and his eye color became closer to orange. 1
