aesthetics
Cottagecore is an aesthetic inspired by a romanticized interpretation of Western farm life. It is based on ideas of simple living in harmony with nature. Cottagecore touches on themes such as self-sufficiency, baking, and caring for others. It can also be called Farmcore and Countrycore.
Cottagecore is an extension of many other nature-based aesthetics, but draws its greatest influence (and perhaps is a complete revival) from the romanticization of the Victorian-era English countryside. Its visual attributes are based on the domestic lifestyle associated with living in such an environment (i.e. the Victorian English countryside), and all the images evoke a sense of comfort, coziness, and easy adventure.
Despite some of its followers’ progressive and subversive outlook on life, Cottagecore has also been criticized for romanticizing Eurocentric farm life. It has also been criticized in the context of North American and Australian conditions, for inadvertently glorifying the aesthetics of colonialism, and the ways in which that same colonialism often trivializes and undervalues the labor of farmers. Of course, such claims are highly specious, since Cottagecore, like any other aesthetic, is intended to be purely benign, such as nostalgia or simply positive emotion.
Cottagecore is often compared to the Grandparentcore aesthetic, which aims to evoke a similar sense of nostalgia. Cottagecore is also related to Naturecore and Warmcore.

visual
Cottagecore has a naturalistic color palette with light green foliage, brown shades of natural stone and wood, straw and flowers. Pastel is welcome in painting on the theme. Lighting is always natural, that is, photographs in the Cottagecore aesthetic can only be taken in sunlight. The range of lighting can be very different - from dawn to dusk and to the horror of midday. You decide. Cottagecore aesthetic motifs can appear in the most unexpected places: in addition to photographs of nature in its natural beauty, Cottagecore can appear in illustrations, floral fabrics, tableware, throws and pillows, and much more. The most common Cottagecore motifs are strawberries, mushrooms, and flowers.
Nature is one of the main components of the Cottagecore visuals. One of the most popular subjects for photographs in this aesthetic is fields dotted with wild flowers.
Also common is photography of deciduous forests, most often in spring or summer, less often in autumn or winter. However, unlike aesthetics like Naturecore, the photographs always contain traces of human intervention in nature: fences, bridges, clotheslines, picnics, etc. Also often depicted are scenes like drying flowers and herbs, weaving wreaths, cooking and baking. In Cottagecore, people must be present in a more or less natural environment, in nature, in gardens, on verandas or in country houses.
fashion
There is a wide range of clothing styles that can fit into the Cottagecore aesthetic. Cottagecore fashion tends to fall either on the hyper-feminine, modernized interpretation of historical fashions, or on more practical and cozy attire that includes elements of whimsy.
The colours in Cottagecore are usually natural or muted, including brown, soft pink, olive green, ivory, burgundy, beige, ochre, dusty rose, pale yellow and blue. The fabrics are usually natural, such as cotton, linen, jersey, etc.
Many of these items are vintage and are bought second-hand, such as from consignment shops or vintage stores. This is in keeping with the respect for the environment and sustainability, as well as the fact that many Cottagecore pieces are highly sought after due to their rarity in modern times and their unique, one-of-a-kind designs, such as Gunne Sax dresses, Edwardian blouses, and antique aprons. However, as the aesthetic has become incredibly popular, it has reached fast fashion, with many brands sold in malls featuring elements of Cottagecore motifs, especially with milkmaid tops.
Cottage fashion typically includes:
Long, loose, flowing dresses and skirts, often, but not always, reminiscent of 1950s loungewear. Layered outfits, full skirts, big karmas, voluminous sleeves and button-down blouses Natural or faded colours including brown, soft pink, olive green, ivory, burgundy, beige, ochre, dusty rose, pale yellow and blue Patterns such as stripes, paisley, subtle florals and gingham Embroidered plants, animals and insects Handmade accessories such as simple beaded or beaded jewelry and knitted hats, scarves and socks Shorts/overalls Lace Longer and looser clothes Waved or braided hair (for girls)
Hairstyles and Makeup
Cottagecore hair and makeup are either naturalistic or have a more fantastical interpretation, with fairy tale motifs.
hair
Long-lasting hair is associated with tradition and femininity. Long, loose hair tends to be wavy.
