Fire (火, Hi) chakra nature that allows the use of the Fire Release (火遁, Katōn), which is strong against Wind, but weak against Water. Wind (風, Kaze, sometimes pronounced fū) chakra nature that allows the use of the Wind Release (風遁, Fūton), which is strong against Lightning, but weak against Fire. Lightning (雷, Kaminari) chakra nature that allows the use of the Lightning Release (雷遁, Raiton), which is strong against Earth, but weak against Wind. Earth (土, Tsuchi) chakra nature that allows the use of the Earth Release (土遁, Doton), which is strong against Water, but weak against Lightning. Water (水, Mizu) chakra nature that allows the use of the Water Release (水遁, Suiton), which is strong against Fire, but weak against Earth.

For the relationships between chakra natures, there is a principle known as Counterbalance (相杀, Shōsatsu). This principle states that two techniques of the same nature will cancel each other out if the same amount of chakra is put into them. For example, in Kakashi's fight with Kakuzu, Kakashi was able to nullify the Lightning Release: Negative Force by deflecting it with his own technique, the Raikiri.

However, if one of the same techniques has more chakra put into it, it would overwhelm the other technique. Not only that, the stronger technique will absorb the weaker one, and the user of the weaker technique will take more damage than the original amount, since their technique has been added to the more powerful technique. For example, in Sasuke's fight with Itachi, they both use the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique against each other, and Sasuke's technique only begins to overwhelm Itachi's when he activates his Cursed Seal. Itachi responds to this by using Amaterasu, the highest level of Fire Release, which absorbs all the fire previously created by the two techniques, and absorbs and grows to the point of drowning Sasuke's technique.

In general, every person has an affinity towards one of the chakra types, a characteristic that seems to be genetic in origin, as entire clans sometimes share the same affinity. Most members of the Uchiha Clan, for example, had an affinity towards the Fire nature.[3]

To know someone's affinity, pieces of paper made from a special type of tree (which are grown and fed with chakra) are used, and they react to the slightest concentration of chakra, and depending on the latent nature of the chakra, it will react in a certain way.[5]

The reactions are as follows:

Fire: The paper catches fire and turns to ash. Wind: The paper will be cut in two. Lightning: The paper will wrinkle. Earth: The paper will crumble. Water: the paper will become soaked.

This affinity makes it easier to learn how to create and control a given nature, though even with this affinity, the process will usually take a good number of years. A shinobi is not limited to only the nature with which they have an affinity. By the time they reach the rank of jōnin, most shinobi have mastered at least two natures. However, due to the difficulty of mastering a nature and the time required to learn it, it is nearly impossible to master all five natures in a normal manner. However, those who possess the Rinnegan gain full access to all five natures, while Kakuzu obtained them by stealing the hearts of other shinobi with an affinity for that nature. Other talented and powerful ninja have been able to master all of the natures on their own without requiring any of the above methods.

In addition to the five basic nature types, there are several more advanced types. By initiating two basic nature transformations at the same time, an entirely new nature with unique properties can be created, and this is known as an "advanced nature type." Doing this requires special skill, and such abilities are rarely seen outside of a Kekkei Genkai.

So far only 13 advanced natures are known, ordered by appearance:

The Ice nature (氷, Kōri), is used by Haku and members of the Yuki Clan in general. It is created by simultaneously using the Water and Wind natures. This nature allows the use of the Ice Release (氷遁, Hyōton). The Yukigakure ninja are capable of utilizing a different type of Ice Release, utilizing the ice, snow, and cold that already exist in the environment. This is not a Kekkei Genkai, as Kakashi was able to copy these techniques with his Sharingan. This is likely a mistake, as the Yuki clan's Kekkei Genkai had not been known as "Ice Release", but at the time the creators of Naruto: Rescue the Snow Princess! believed they had "invented" this "new" type of nature. Furthermore, while Haku's techniques have unusual effects, this type of Ice Release focuses on the more obvious effects of ice, such as freezing. The Wood nature (木, Ki), is used by Hashirama Senju, Yamato, Danzō Shimura, White Zetsu, Black Zetsu, Tobi, Madara Uchiha, Obito Uchiha, Orochimaru and in the anime Asura Ōtsutsuki and Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki

It is created by simultaneously using the Water and Earth natures. This nature allows the use of the Wood Release (木遁, Mokuton). The Magnetism nature (磁性, Jisei) is used by Toroi, the Third Kazekage, Shukaku, Gaara, Naruto Uzumaki, Rasa, Bunpuku, Shinki, and Kajūra. This nature allows the use of the Magnet Release (磁遁, Jiton). It is created by simultaneously utilizing two unknown natures. Lava natures (溶岩, Yōgan) are used by Son Goku, Roshi, Naruto Uzumaki, Kyūsuke, Dodai, Mei Terumī, Kurotsuchi, Boro, and Etoro Konjiki. They are created by simultaneously using the Fire and Earth natures. These natures allow the use of the Dissolution Release (溶遁, Yōton) and the Fusion Release (熔遁, Yōton). Exclusive to the anime, the Crystal Nature (結晶, Kesshō), used by Guren, is possibly created by combining the nature of Earth with another unknown nature. This nature allows the use of the Crystal Release (晶遁, Shōton). The Storm Nature (嵐, Arashi), used by Darui, Madara Uchiha, and stolen by Hiruko, is created by simultaneously using the Lightning and Water Natures. This nature allows the use of the Storm Release (嵐遁, Ranton).

It's likely that the two users are using a different type of this element, as Hiruko is a character only seen in Naruto Shippūden 3: Inheritors of the Will of Fire, and Darui hadn't been introduced at that point. There's also a significant difference between the techniques of this type they use. The Steam Nature (沸騰, Futtō), used by Mei Terumī, Kokuō, Han, and Naruto Uzumaki, is created by simultaneously using the Water and Fire natures. This nature allows the use of the Steam Release (沸遁, Futton). The Dust nature (塵, Chiri) is used by Mū and Ōnoki. It is created by simultaneously using the Earth, Wind, and Fire natures. This nature allows the use of the Dust Release (塵遁, Jinton). The Steel nature (鋼, Hagane) is used by Metoro Konjiki, allowing him to use the Steel Release (鋼遁, Kōton). It is unknown what natures it involves. The Explosion Nature (爆発, Bakuhatsu), used by Gari and Deidara, allows the use of the Explosion Release (爆遁, Bakuton). It is created by simultaneously using the Earth nature and another unknown element. The Burn Nature (やけど, Yakedo), used by Pakura, allows the use of the Burn Release (灼遁, Shakuton). It is created by simultaneously utilizing the Fire and Wind natures. The Mud Nature (粘土, Nendo) is used by Ameyuki. This nature allows the use of the Mud Release (泥遁, Deiton). It is created by simultaneously using the Earth and Water natures.

The Typhoon (台風, Taifū) nature is used by Fūshin, This nature allows the use of the Typhoon Release (颱遁, Taiton), it is a form related to the Wind. Two additional natures have been shown in the movies:

The Darkness Nature (冥暗, Meian) is stolen by Hiruko and allows the use of the Darkness Release (冥遁, Meiton). It is unknown what natures it entails. The Speed nature (迅速, Jinsoku), is stolen by Hiruko and allows the use of the Speed Release (迅遁, Jinton). It is unknown what natures it entails.

While Nature Transformation changes the true nature of chakra, Shape Manipulation allows a ninja to change the true form and actions of chakra, altering its abilities. Because of this, a technique like the Rasengan can become the Wind Release: Rasengan or Wind Release: Rasen Shuriken, due to the Wind Release being united with the movement of chakra. The cutting nature of Wind chakra when used in conjunction with the form of millions of tiny blades in a spiral formation, this results in a much more powerful technique, as seen when used against Kakuzu.

Aside from the five basic types of nature transformation, there is a sixth type: Yin (陰, In), which is the basis of imagination and spiritual energy, allowing for the use of the Yin Release (陰遁, Inton); and Yang (陽, Yō), the basis of vitality and physical energy, allowing for the use of the Yang Release (陽遁, Yōton). Together they allow for the use of the Yin-Yang Release (陰陽遁, Onmyōton).[6] Yamato implies that Yin and Yang are the source of non-elemental jutsu such as Shadow Possession Technique, Mind Body Switch Technique, medical ninjutsu, genjutsu, etc.[7]

The Yin-Yang transformation involves altering the amount and balance between spiritual energy and the physical energy of the chakras. As explained by Shikamaru Nara, Tayuya's spirit worms were forms of spiritual energy that have small amounts of physical energy, thus requiring stability and feeding off the physical energy they lack. Shikamaru also mentioned that Tayuya was the same type of ninja as him, meaning she is capable of using these types of "special chakra" manifestations in battle, supporting the belief that the Nara Clan's shadow techniques are based on Yin and Yang.

Techniques such as Toad Oil Bullet and Poison Mist mention that they "convert" or "knead" chakra into different materials or substances, but they have never been mentioned as being used as chakra natures. Furthermore, they cannot be classified as advanced natures due to the fact that they are not Kekkei Genkai. Some other techniques involving substance manipulation are also often confused with natures, such as ink, bone, paper, or silk. However, these substances cannot be produced from chakra. That is, chakra does not change by nature, and is rather a technique for changing and multiplying already existing substances. The Yata Mirror was said to be imbued with all of nature's transformations to modify its own characteristics and thus be able to deflect any attack.[9] It is unknown if this means it contains advanced elements. Despite not knowing the natures that the Explosive Release possesses, when Sasuke Uchiha fights Deidara, Sasuke mentions that Deidara is only using Earth-type seals.
