Events of 2020

By 2020, wife Gi-hun left him and married a new husband, starting to live with him, taking their daughter from Gi-hun. Gi-hun had become an impoverished divorcee who was working as a chauffeur, knee deep in debt due to a combination of losing his once stable career at a car manufacturing plant, a failed business venture, and a gambling addiction. He lived with his elderly mother, who gave him some money to get his daughter dinner and a present for her birthday. His mother warns him that unless he shows that he is financially able to support his daughter, her stepfather will move her to the United States. Continuation of events 2020. "The Squid Game" (The first game "Slow and steady wins the race")

Gi-hun is driven to the games arena and wakes up in a room with 455 other people. Gi-hun then meets Sang-woo (his childhood best friend), Oh Il-nam (Player 001), an old man, who tells Gi-hun that he has dementia and a growing brain tumor. Gi-hun recognizes women Kang Sae-byeok (Player 067) as the pickpocket who stole his money. She is being attacked by Jang Deok-su (Player 101) a vicious gangster, until Gi-hun steps in to stop the fight. The guards enter the room and welcome the players, explaining that they will play six games over six days, and that whoever wins all six games will win a lot of money. Some players express disbelief of the games, to which the guard says that they know the players are in large debts and that they need the money the games offer them to have a better life. They lead all the players through multiple staircases to the room for the first game, "Slow and steady wins the race". The game starts off in a room resembling a field with trees with a large doll and a finish line. At the starting line, a voice announces the rules of the game: they can move when the doll sings "무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다", but must stop when it finishes singing. Moving when it's not singing or not making it to the end in five minutes will result in being eliminated. One player flinched and a bullet immediately flew into his head. This leads to a bunch of players trying to run away in panic as they see what "elimination" truly means, with only some surviving due to them staying in place. Gi-hun almost makes it to the finish line when he trips over the corpse of another player and is nearly seen by the doll, but he is saved when Player 199, Ali Abdul, catches him before he falls and lands on the ground. The two make it to the end just as the timer ends, and the rest of the players who did not finish the game within the time limit are eliminated. The roof of the game room closes as it is revealed that they are on a secluded island.

Continuation of events 2020. "The Squid Game" (After the first game)

After the first game, all the surviving contestants are brought back to the dormitory. The guards enter and congratulate the players for winning the first game, stating that 255 players were eliminated. Several players beg to be let go from the games, promising that they will pay off their debts. A guard says the games are not to punish the players for their debts, but to give them a second chance. After being reminded that players who refuse to participate will be killed, Sang-woo invokes the third clause of the consent form that says the game can be ended if the majority vote to leave. The guards agree to the voting but show the cash prize first, with a gigantic transparent piggy bank being lowered from the ceiling that begins to be filled up with stacks of cash totaling ₩25 billion. They reveal that each contestant is worth ₩100 million and that the total prize pot will be ₩45.6 billion. The guards further explain that the players can make a choice between leaving or staying, and set up a voting machine with two buttons - a circle to continue and an X to leave. If they leave, they don't get any of the prize money. Gi-Hun is the first to vote not to continue. In the end, the score was tied 100-100 until the last player 001 voted in order to give up the game.
After this, everyone is dropped off on the mainland, with the promise that if the majority of people want to continue the games in a few days, the games will be resumed. Gi-hun goes to the police station and tries to report the game. However, the officers find his story too ridiculous to be true, to the point that they not only refuse, but they also take him for a madman. Soon Gi-hoon learns that his mother has been hospitalized with diabetes and needs surgery, possibly amputating her leg. At night, despite the advice of doctors and the pleas of Gi-hoon, she leaves the hospital. Racked with guilt, Gi-hun swears that he'll make things right and get the money. Gi-Hun decides to return to the game.

Continuation of events 2020. "The Squid Game" (The second game "Sugar Honeycomb")

The players then wake up in the familiar facility. Player 001 gets woken up by Gi-hun, saying about almost everyone came back. During their conversation, Gi-hun form a team with Player 001, Cho Sang-woo and Ali Abdul. The players are taken to the next game, which will happen inside a room which resembles a playground. In the room, there are four doors with a shape each: a circle, a star, a triangle, and an umbrella. Each player must choose a shape and stand in a line in front of the corresponding door. Gi-hun and his alliance decide that they should all pick a shape of their own. Gi-hun unfortunately gets the umbrella candy. Then, the announcer says the next game is Sugar Honeycombs, much to Gi-hun's horror, as he picked the hardest shape of them all. Many other players mistakenly break their shapes at that point and are eliminated. Gi-hun watches in terror. Gi-Hoon starts licking the candy, player 001 picks up on his idea and does the same. Soon, the two successfully carve the figure and enter the dorm.

Continuation of events 2020. "The Squid Game" (The night after the second game)

After Deok-su and his team stood in line twice during lunch, a few players were denied food. Player 271 confronts the mobster as a result, and Sae-byeok and the others see Deok-su beat him to death. In response, Gi-hun begins pleading with the guards to intervene in Deok-su's murder of 271, but is ignored. After being killed, the player is simply added to the list of players who have been eliminated, additional money is put to the piggy bank, and two guards appear with a casket to remove the body. They all realise that players can kill each other in between games because there is no punishment for this homicide. After that, Gi-hun catches Deak-su's gang monitoring Sae-byeok. Gi-hun encourages her to join his team, which will be reunited by his bed in the case of an attack. Sae-byeok claims that she has no faith in anyone, particularly the Squid Game players. Gi-hun explains to her that they trust people not because they are trustworthy, but because they have no other option while playing the games. During the Special Game, Sae-byeok seeks refuge from Gi-hun and his team. She reminds him that he invited her, and they soon notice that Deok-su is following her. The gangster tries to stab Sae-byeok with her own knife, but Gi-hun gets her out the way of danger. All the members of Gi-hun's team help fight Deok-su's gag. Then they all notice the elderly participant Oh Il-nam asking the players to stop killing each other from the top of a bed, which ultimately works as soldiers enter the room, firing their guns to stop the riot. Jun-ho (disguised as a security guard, because he is looking for his brother who disappeared in the squid game, so he followed the boats that take all the participants to the game and dressed up as a security guard, from that moment watching and trying to find his brother) goes towards Gi-hun, asking him if he knows someone named "Hwang In-ho." Gi-hun states that they don't use their names here.

Continuation of events 2020. "The Squid Game" (The third game "Tug of War")

The lights in the Player's Dorm light up, signaling the 3rd game. The guards have their head count, while the players are dividing into teams of 10 for the next game. Sang-woo tells Gi-hun that they need more men for the game, and the 5 look for 5 more players to join their team. Sae-byeok, looking for another member, finds Ji-yeong (240), demanding her to join Gi-hun's team. The team is short of a member, with Sang-woo complaining that their team is weak and that they'll end up with people who got kicked out. Han Mi-nyeo (212) hears this, and walks into the circle, joining the team, saying that she's better than Sae-byeok and Ji-yeong because they're wimpy. The timer then runs out, and the game starts. The teams get led outside to another room. A guard introduces this as Tug of War, explaining the rules of the game. Il-nam notices his team is demotivated, and explains that Tug of War is more than raw strength. He explains that it takes good teamwork to win a game of Tug of War. Thanks to Il-nam's advice and teamwork, Gi-hun's team wins and goes back to the dorm. In the evening, Gi-Hun remembers the bloody night of yesterday and decides to barricade his team and guard it at night. At night, Il-nam comes to him and they start to have a heart-to-heart talk, but Il-nam got sick and felt bad. Gi-Hun helped him and put him to bed. The night passed peacefully. The next day, Gi-hun notices that Il-nam has wet himself, so Gi-hoon helps him and gives him his jacket so he can cover himself.

Continuation of events 2020. "The Squid Game" (The fourth game "Marbles")

Players are led into an empty room and told that they need to find a partner. Gi-hun notices that Il-nam is sitting alone in the corner. Il-nam said that he is too old and weak, so no one wants to take him as a partner. Gi-Hun feels too sorry for Il-nam and he takes him as his partner. Then the guards introduce the players to the fourth game, "Marbles". To win the game, the players have to try to steal all of their opponent's marbles without violence while playing a sub-game with them. The person who ends up with no marbles is killed off and eliminated. They have a time limit. Their opponent in the game is who they chose to be their partner. This comes as a shock to everyone as they had partnered up with someone they trust. Player 240 and 067 start having a heart-to-heart talk instead of playing. Player 240 realized that Player 067 needed money to buy a house, pick up his brother from the orphanage, and move his mother to China to save her. Realizing that player 240 himself has no goal, she gives the victory to her friend 064 and loses. With tears in his eyes, Player 064 enters the dorm. Ali and Sung-woo played, but Sun-woo lost. He begged Ali to wait and he would figure out a way for the two of them to escape. Ali agrees out of pure kindness, But Sang-woo tricks him, gives his marbles to the guard and wins. Ali is dropped out of the game, and Sang-woo gets into the dorm. Il-nam and Gi-Hun played marbles, but the old man often forgot everything and Gi-Hun, deceiving the old man, won every game. Gi-Hun is almost in tears because he doesn't want to deceive the old man, his friend, but he wants to survive. In the end, the old man says that he knows that Gi-Hun is cheating him and winning. Gi-Hun cries in self-disgust, but the old man gives Gi-Hun his last marble, saying that best friends always help each other out. Il-nam is eliminated and Gi-hun slowly walks into the dorm crying.

Continuation of events 2020. "The Squid Game" (Fifth game "Glass Stepping Stones")

In the dorm, one player is crying and begging the other players to stop playing and stop the game because he lost his wife. Sang-woo scolds him and everyone goes to bed. In the morning, the player who lost his wife unfortunately could not cope with this loss. Soon, the remaining 16 players advance to the fifth game, but before that they must choose a number from 1 to 16. Gi-Hun thinks for a long time and chooses the last 16th number. Security guards announces that the fifth game is Glass Stepping Stones, and that in each row, there is one tempered glass panel which can support the weight of two players, and a normal glass panel, which will break if even one player lands on it. The objective is to cross to the other side before the 16-minute time limit runs out. As the game progresses, players fall and crash to their deaths. Only 4 players are left: Gi-hun, Sae-byeok, Sang-woo, and Player 017, the lattermost being at the front of the line. He claims to be have been a glass manufacturer with over 30 years of experience, and says that if viewed from a certain angle, tempered glass will have faint stain marks. He correctly guesses the next correct panel, to the relief of the other three. However, when the Front-Man turns off the lights, he is unable to determine the last correct panel. With time running out, Sang-woo mercilessly shoves Player 017 off and into the last trick panel, sending him falling to his death. Sae-byeok and Gi-hun are in shock, but have no time to react as the timer approaches zero. The remaining three players safely make it across just as the timer runs out, and the remaining glass panels are shattered, sending sharp glass shards among the three remaining players. One fragment hit Sae-byeok in the stomach, but she covered her stomach with her hand and no one noticed.

Continuation of events 2020. "The Squid Game" (The night after the fifth game)

When the last three players are Gi-hun, Sang-woo and Sae-byeok returning to the dorm, Gi-Hun and Sang-woo start arguing. Ki-hoon accuses Sang-woo of murder and condemns him, asking if he would have thrown Gi-hun out if he was in that player's place. Soon, security guards came into their dorm and congratulated them on their victory, after which they were led into a huge dining hall and fed food. After dinner, the three players were left with knives and sent back to the dorm for lights out. They sat with forks in the corners, looking at each other, afraid that someone would attack someone. Gi-Hun was afraid that Sang-woo would attack them, and decided to go to Sae-byeok's bed. He assures her that he will not harm her, but simply wants to be with her at night to protect himself if Sang-woo decides to attack. They started to have a heart-to-heart talk and tell about their life before the Game. After some time, Gi-Hun discovers that Sang-woo has fallen asleep, so he approaches to him, but Sae-byeok stops him, saying that he is not that kind of person and will not kill him. Gi-Hun returns to her bed, sitting next to her. But he felt ill and discovered that she had a wound on her stomach. She begs Gi-Hoon to promise her that he will take care of his homeland and take her brother from the orphanage. Gi-Hun runs up to the metal door, knocking on it, calling for help to help Sae-byeok. But when he turned around, he saw Sang-woo standing next to Sae-byeok's beg with a knife and she died. Gi-Hoon, in desperation, rushes at Sang-woo with screams and they begin to fight, but guards run into the room and separate them, after which they put Sae-byeok in a coffin and carry her out while Gi-Hun howls in agony.

Continuation of events 2020. "The Squid Game" (The Last "Squid Game")

In the morning, the last two players - Gi-Hun and Sang-woo are taken to the very first game location, where they played "Slow and steady wins the race" and were explained the rules. They were playing a game, but suddenly began to fight to the death, abandoning the rules of the game. They fight and argue, blaming each other. Sang-woo says that Gi-Hoon is too soft and naive, so he became a poor loser. Gi-Hoon says to the end that killing people is wrong, no matter what it is for, human life is not worth any money. Soon it started to rain, but they were still fighting with knives. Soon Gi-hoon gained the upper hand over Sang-woo. He raised the knife above his head, but slammed the knife into the sand instead of his head. The guards declared Gi-Hun the winner. Gi-Hun stood up and headed for the exit, but suddenly turned around and headed towards the defeated Sang-woo, reminding that according to the rule, if the majority of players refuse to play, they will be released. Gi-Hoon says he doesn't need the money anymore, he begged Sang-woo to say he doesn't want to play anymore and begged him to go home together, reminding them of what best friends they were as children and how they were friends. Sang-woo reaches for Gi-hoon's hand, but suddenly pulls out a knife, with a desperately weak smile, he apologized to Gi-Hun and died. Gi-hun is caught completely off guard, and holds a dying Sang-woo in his arms, distraught but helpless and Sang-woo slowly chokes to death. Sang-woo can only mutter the words "My mum...", implying that he wants Gi-hun to help his mother with his prize money. When Sang-woo dies, Gi-hun cries uncontrollably at the loss of his childhood friend. After this, Gi-Hun is tied up and dragged into a limousine and the sleeping gas is turned on. Gi-Hoon wakes up, takes the money and goes home, seeing that his mother has died. He lies down on the floor with her and cries.

Events of 2021

Gi-Hun hadn't touched his money for a year. He was in a depressive period and didn't want anything. He was sitting on the seashore and suddenly a woman came up to him and sold him flowers. In the flowers, Gi-Hun found a "Squid Games" card with an address listed. He reached the designated place Seoul Sky Building. Once he gets there, he sees a bed. He walks closer and sees Il-nam on it. When Il-nam revealed he was the creator and mastermind of the games, Gi-hun gets furious and asks questions but Il-nam insists on making a bet with Gi-hun about whether a drunk man outside will stay there untill midnight or not. While waiting, Il-Nam explained that he started holding these games because it is interesting to watch people who choose death over life and that they are all greedy egoists, He says that this is the essence of humanity and all people are the same. But Il-nam started talking about the reason he started the games-because it was fun, and states that he genuinly enjoyed playing with Gi-hun, as he helped Il-nam remember things from the past he had long forgotten. When midnight strikes, the drunk man gets help. Gi-Hun laughed happily, saying "Do you see it, Il-Nam? You were wrong, you lost.", but Il-Nam had already died. Gi-Hun only whispered "I know you saw it." Soon Gi-Hun found a purpose in life again, went to the hairdresser and decided to change myself by cutting my hair shorter and dyeing it red. He took Sae-Byeok's brother, saying that they were good friends. He took him to the mother of his dead friend Sang-woo, so that she would look after the boy. He left them a suitcase with a huge amount of money and went to the airport. He wanted to go to the USA to see his daughter. But suddenly he heard a bang and a groan. He woke up to see the same recruiter with a suitcase, playing tdakchi with a man. He desperately runs after the recruiter, but he escapes. Gi-Hun snatched the card with the number from the man, telling him to never dare play this game.

Continuation of events of 2021

Later, Gi-hun boards the plane, but stops to call the number. Once he dials the number, The Front Man answers. He warns Gi-hun to not get involved and board his plane for his own good, indicating that he is still being kept under surveillance by the Squid Game Staff. Despite this, Gi-hun decided to call off his journey to America last minute and started walking back, to seek revenge and fight back against the game's organizers.[5] He then went to the bathroom and removed the tracking chip embedded by the Front Man in his ear to cover his track. Gi-Hun has made it his goal to find the creators of the game and stop the Squid Game forever in order to save people.

Events of 2024

Gi-Hun became serious and responsible. No one remembers the last time he smiled, laughed. Using his wealth, he hires multiple private detectives including his old loan sharks to track down the recruiter and those that affiliated to the Game as well as locating the island where the Game takes place. He also buys a motel to serve as his base of operation and stocks a huge pile of firearms he bought from the black markets to practice marksmanship as he plans a rebellion within the game. After three years, his endeavour bear no fruit. Three years later, Gi-hun is still looking for the recruiter relentlessly, continuing to work with his former loan shark Kim Jeong-rae and his lackeys to track down the recruiter, financing them with large sums of cash for their work. Kim and his friend Choi Woo-seok continually update Gi-hun with their searches, one day they finally spot the Recruiter playing Ddakji with a victim in a train station in Seoul and report this to Gi-hun via phone. But the recruiter caught two men and killed one. After which he came to Gi-Hun and suggested playing Russian roulette. During this game they discuss. Gi-Hoon says that the recruiter is nothing but a running mutt on two legs around the Frontman, carrying out his orders, and he will never be someone worthwhile. The recruiter tells Gi-Hun that he is not who he claims to be, that Gi-Hun is the same as all people, greedy egoists. But Gi-Hun wins fair and square at Russian roulette, proving the opposite. The recruiter sees this and remembers Gi-Hun's words that the recruiter will always be just a pawn. He understands this and loses the meaning of life, laughing madly, and, resigned to defeat, shoots himself in the head with a pistol. Suddenly, police officer Jun-Ho found Gi-hun. Jun-Ho asked Gi-Hoon to find the island where the Squid Games are taking place because he is still looking for his brother. Gi-hoon agrees. They came up with a plan to gather an armed group of people and find this ill-fated isl

Gi-Hun had a chip inserted into his tooth, after which they track down one club where Gi-hun was lured into a limo. Here Gi-hun talks to the Front Man on the radio and askes him to stop the Squid Game once and for all, but when the Front Man is adamant that the game will not end unless the world changes, Gi-hun askes to return to the game, encouraging the Front Man to let him do so, sharing that he thinks the VIPS would love to see a previous contestant comeback. (unknown to the Front Man, Gi-hun plans to infiltrate the Squid Game and take out its staff with the help of his gun-wielding team with Hwang Jun-ho and a sailor who saved Jun-ho's life also searching for the island the Squid Games are based on, joined by Choi Woo-seok and the ex-marines on the expedition).

Gi-Hun's Return to Squid Game in 2024

Gi-hun wakes up as a contestant in the Squid Game again like number 456. He discovers that his old friend, Park Jung-bae is at the game, rekindles with him. Soon the game "Slow and steady wins the race" began. He finds that his tracker tooth was removed from his mouth, and he realises that his original strategy has been ruined. Gi-Hun desperately stares at one point, realizing that he will have to go through this hell again and survive. Gi-Hun runs forward decisively and speaks loudly "Wait! I've played these games before! These are death games!" Of course, no one believes his words and considers him crazy. When the game starts, Gi-Hun explains the rules again and tells everyone to be careful and not to break the rules under any circumstances. He led the way, telling people when to stand and when to run, telling them the right tactics. But one man moved and a bullet flew at him. Everyone started to panic, run, and the number of dead players increased. Gi-Hun desperately shouted for everyone to stay put, trying to save everyone. Most of the players listened to him and they successfully completed the first game. When surviving players enter the dorm, it begs for mercy. But Gi-Hun steps forward and reminds them of the third rule of the game, which states that if the majority of players agree to give up the game, they will be released. The guards led the vote. The score was tied, 200-200. But then player 001 came out and pressed the button, agreeing to continue playing, continuing the game. After the vote, Player 001 approaches Gi-Hun and begins to talk to him. At first, Gi-Hoon is tense and negative towards Player 001, but then he gains his trust and they become partners. Gi-hoon had his own group of people, where he was the leader, told how to play, helped his comrades and at the same time came up with a plan to stop the game. Player 001 says his name is Oh Young-il. Gi-Hun begins to trust him as the game progresses, but he didn't know something about him...

Hwang In-Ho

His name: In-Ho. His last name: Hwang He is 49 years old. Born February 2, 1976 In-Ho is missing one kidney because he gave it to his brother Jun-Ho. The frontman is the second host of the Squid Game after the games creator, the late old Il-Nam. He is Hwang Jun Ho's older brother. He deeply regrets shooting him and leaving him to die. It haunts him and he blames himself for it. Before the Squid Game, he had a pregnant wife who died and did not survive childbirth. As the Front Man, In-ho is cold and calculating, being the main overseer of the games. He is shown to be remorseless with his killing, showing no sign of hesitation when killing others who get in his way. He is highly analytical and meticulous with his anonymity as well as his planning, ensuring that the games are hidden from the outside world. Despite his overall lack of morality, however, In-ho places a lot of importance on maintaining equality and fairness in the games. He views it as one of the games' most important aspects and is incredibly strict with it to the point of going as far as killing those who take advantage of the games' nature to get ahead. Under the alias Oh Young-il, he disguised himself as a player of the games and presented himself as level-headed, logical, and reasonable. He appeared highly empathetic and caring of others. He appeared to have a humorous side to him as he had a habit of making bad jokes, although this may simply be an attempt to try to fit in more with others. He is still a remorseless person at his core, he does not completely lack a sense of humanity as he still harbors some care towards other people. However, his overall lack of empathy towards others leads him to lack understanding of Gi-hun's own empathy towards others. As a result of this, he frequently observes Gi-hun's behavior towards others throughout the games, which he finds himself both puzzled and intrigued by.Despite this, he can be judgmental about Gi-hun's actions. He still loves his brother Jun-Ho

Jun-Ho is a police officer who is looking for his missing brother. During his search, he learns about the Squid Game and thinks that it is where he disappeared. He follows a truck carrying players to boats and takes them across the sea to the island. He snuck onto one such boat and disguised himself as a security guard. He investigates his brother's disappearance while collecting evidence to convince the police of the existence of the Squid Game. Jun-Ho learns that VIP guests come here and pay huge amounts of money to watch the Squid Games live. He also learned that the organs of losing players were sold here. Towards the end of the games, he escaped from the island, but was caught by Frontman and driven to a cliff. He asked Jun-Ho to join him. Eventually, he took off his mask and Jun-Ho realized that the frontman was his missing older brother In-Ho, whom he had been looking for for so long. He accused him of this Game and reproached him how he could do such a thing and refused to join him. So In-Ho shot him in both shoulders and Jun-Ho fell off the cliff into the sea. In-Ho only shot in the shoulders on purpose so that his brother could survive. In 2024, when he met Gi-Hun, he never stopped looking for his brother. He wants to meet him again no matter what, no matter the insult and betrayal.
