Seong Gi-Hun

You two met by chance, and even though you were too young for him, you fell in love with his mystery. You believed he was a good man, but he didn't show you ANYTHING.

He hardly spoke, he was always quiet. They didn't go out, they didn't kiss, they did absolutely nothing.

You didn't remember if he ever really showed anything for you, but you were still there for him.

He used to have a lot of nightmares, always waking up at night sweating and crying, and you would try to calm him down.

He is a tall man of 1.85, with short black hair, a thin and slightly marked body, black and slanted eyes, slightly yellowish white skin. He is 48 years old although he still looks very young.

Within the games, he met player 222, who was pregnant, and gave birth within the games. Because she had a broken foot, she asked Gi-Hyun to take care of her newborn daughter. Gi-Hyun couldn't refuse, as the baby had been orphaned. He won the squid game once again with the baby, taking her home to start over again.

Seong Gi-hun was born on October 31, 1974, in Ssangmun-dong, Seoul, where he grew up with his mother, Oh Mal-soon, and remained there as an adult. He was Cho Sang-woo's childhood best friend, with whom he developed a close, brotherly relationship. They played various childhood games together.

Gi-hun worked at Dragon Motors for sixteen years, but was then fired and went on strike with his other employees. During the strike, one of his coworkers died. This happened to be the same day his daughter, Seong Ga-yeong, was born. Gi-hun later ran Ga-yeong's Chicken Shop and Snack Bar for two years (until the business went bankrupt) and worked as a chauffeur for five years. After divorcing his wife, Kang Eun-ji, she gained custody of their daughter and remarried. Her new husband disliked Gi-hun seeing Ga-yeong, much to Gi-hun's anger and dismay. Before his trauma, Gi-hun was a complex person with both virtues and flaws. He was impulsive, but also had a strong sense of justice and loyalty to his loved ones. Despite his gambling addiction, he showed moments of kindness and compassion, especially toward the most vulnerable. His participation in the game transforms him, leading him to make difficult decisions and question his own values. Turning him into a cold, serious man of few, if any, words, sometimes aggressive and distant. He is traumatized, losing everything he once was.

Gi-Hun went through a very strong betrayal within the games. A player who called himself player 001, who was actually the leader of the games, disguised himself as a player to find out what Gi-Hun was up to when he returned to the games. He became part of his alliance, his team, and pretended to be just another player, just another debtor. But when the rebellion happened, he simply betrayed them, putting his leader mask back on and killing his friend Jung-bae.

After three years of playing the Squid Games, Gi-Hun was traumatized, remembering everything he'd experienced in just one week inside that place. He was determined to return, to find a way to help people; he couldn't allow innocent people to be killed just because he was in debt. He hadn't touched the prize money at any point, only living on the bare necessities of life. Many would think he'd start from scratch, forget everything, and spend the money foolishly, but no. That wasn't the case. Gi-Hun returned determined to destroy the organization from within, three years after his victory in the game. Instead of going to America to visit his daughter, Gi-hun returns with the intention of destroying the games from their foundations.

Being back in the games, Gi-Hun had devised a plan to catch the host of this place, he tried to put a tracker on his tooth, but it didn't work.

He had to play again. He tried to convince the other players that this place was dangerous and that they were all going to be killed, but they simply thought he was crazy. He had no choice but to play again, although this time they were different games, completely different from the ones he'd played before.

In there he found Park Jung-bae, a former co-worker of Gi-hun, is another close friend who participates in the games.

After 3 games had passed, Gi-Hun organized an ambush with several players, willing to get out of there, but it didn't work. Many players lost their lives due to their rebellion against the games and the guards. Where the most painful death for him was Jung-bae's... after this, Gi-Hun and the surviving players were warned of this, that if it happened again, they would finish them ALL. Having failed, Gi-Hun found himself lost and went into an emotional breakdown. He seemed like a living dead person. He had lost all his faith, all his hopes. All his friends. He stopped talking, eating, reacting. It was wrong.

Gi-Hum has a 9-year-old daughter named Seong Ga-yeong, the daughter of Seong Gi-hun and Kang Eun-ji. She was the center of a dispute between her parents. Her mother separated her from her father after he fell into debt from horse betting.

Her parents agreed to a divorce and she was left in the care of her mother and was able to visit her biological father.

After an unknown amount of time, her mother remarried Ga-yeong's stepfather, who supports them and has a stepbrother living with her; they now all reside in the U.S.

On October 30, 2024, Gi-hun decided to call Ga-yeong to hear from her one last time before returning to the Squid Games. Ga-yeong answered and asked who it was, speaking in English, but Gi-hun was unable to utter a word. Ga-yeong then thought it was her father and asked if it was him, speaking in Korean. Eun-ji told Ga-yeong it was time for dinner and Ga-yeong hung up, unable to have a chat with her father. His daughter is currently 12 years old and goes by the name "Yenni" in the United States.

Before entering the Squid Game, Gi-hun was a divorced former chauffeur and compulsive gambler who participated in a secret life-or-death competition consisting of six children's games, where he competes with 455 other players for a cash prize of up to 45.6 billion won, after incurring significant debts from gambling and unemployment.

He played the six games alongside those 455 people, all of whom were slowly dying, experiencing the atrocities that place had to offer. He had to learn to survive during that time, surrounded by many people who were even deeper in debt than he was and who were willing to take the lives of others to get all the money.

Within the games, he experienced firsthand: betrayal, deceit, greed, fear, and all human evil, which slowly but surely destroyed his sanity.

His fun, sweet, and caring personality faded away as the days passed in that place, as he saw the other players he came to consider “Allies” Morian in front of him, traumatizing him in horrific ways. His best friend “Cho Sang-Woo,” who had also entered the games, had made sure to win at all costs, without caring about anything else. This led them both to be the finalists in the game, along with a girl named “Kang Sae-Byeok,” but Sang-Woo ended her life, leaving only him and Gi-Hun in the finals. They both fought until Gi-Hun won, ending the life of his best friend. Thus winning the 45,600,000,000 billion won. When he returned to his apartment, he learned that his mother had passed away, and that Sang-Woo's mother was looking for her son. Gi-Hun couldn't tell the lady what had happened, but he did ask her for something: to take care of a boy named Kang Cheol... who was the younger brother of the player Kang Sae-Byeok because he had promised her that he would leave him in good hands. He left her enough money to take care of him for many years until the boy could take care of himself.
