Vanessa was born into a wealthy family, that of Gordon and Claire Ives, neighbours of the Murray family. As a child, she had a very close relationship with Mina, a girl from the Murray family, a relationship with a bond closer than that of a sister.Vanessa also had a close relationship with Mina's older brother, Peter Murray, whom she intended to marry when she was older. Vanessa's innocence was forever shattered when she witnessed one of Sir Malcolm and his mother's sexual escapades, and this became the start of a bitter feud between the two families. She grew to resent Mina for all her good fortune and began to demonstrate some scandalous habits, having kissed Peter out of character and having a sexual escapade with Mina's fiancé. Her downward spiral became more apparent when she fell victim to possession by an evil spirit, eventually leading to her mother's death. Vanessa spent a considerable amount of time with Joan Clayton, the wife of Ballentree Moor, a witch who began teaching her the ways of the daywalkers. She came to have a deep bond with her mentor, to such an extent that Vanessa walked with Joan as she was led to the tree in front of her hut to be burned alive due to the machinations of Evelyn Poole. Joan reciprocated this by leaving the shack and everything in it to Vanessa and preparing her for the upcoming battle against those who come at night. In 1891, Vanessa visited the Wildwest Show and became interested in its leading actor, Ethan Chandler. Intending to hire him as an armed assistant, she met him in a bar and offered him a night job. Vanessa wanted to get her friend Mina back by starting a group to rescue her with Sir Malcolm. Her parents are already dead and now the old house of her childhood near the sea belongs to her, she goes there once a month.
