Tony Stark is a genius inventor and billionaire industrialist, who dons his cutting-edge armor to become the superhero Iron Man. The adopted son of weapons manufacturer Howard Stark,[47] Tony inherited his family's company at a young age following the death of his parents. While overseeing a manufacturing plant in a foreign country, Stark was kidnapped by local terrorists. Rather than give in to his captors' demands to build weapons for them, Stark created a powerful suit of armor so he could escape.[48] Back in America, Stark upgraded the armor and put his vast resources and intellect to work to better the world as Iron Man.[49][50]

Tony kept his alter-ego a secret for most of his career, juggling his responsibilities as head of Stark Industries with becoming a fixture in the superhero community as Iron Man, founding the world's premier superhero team, the Avengers. Over the years, Stark has faced numerous enemies, such as the Mandarin, Justin Hammer, Iron Monger, and the Titanium Man, as well as many personal demons, most notably his alcohol addiction,[51] which once caused Tony to stop being a superhero, with his confidant Jim Rhodes becoming Iron Man instead. [52] For many years, Tony covered up his alter-ego by claiming that Iron Man was his anonymous bodyguard, but eventually made his dual identity public.[53]

Following the Kree–Skrull War, Stark held a meeting in Wakanda with Professor X, Mister Fantastic, Black Bolt, Doctor Strange, and Namor to form a clandestine, unnamed group to devise strategy and policy regarding global threats (the "Illuminati"). Stark's original goal was to create a governing body to which all of the world's superheroes would answer. However, differing beliefs and philosophies, as well as the fact that many heroes chose to hide their true identities, made Stark's plan unfeasible. Despite this, the group agreed to share vital information.[86]

Armor: Iron Man wears a sophisticated suit of armor containing a variety of offensive weapons. He owns several suits aside from the current model. Some are mission-specific or prototypes for testing, others are older models kept for nostalgia or research. He has developed a special briefcase to carry his armor. Some models are too large for the briefcase and require a separate module. As the billionaire head of a global corporation and a genius-level inventor, Stark is able to acquire or develop additional technology whenever possible.

Donning Iron Man Armor: Originally, Iron Man's armor was donned manually.[48][76][309][310] Beginning with the Iron Man Model 2 armor, the only parts that had to be attached to his body were the torso, the arm-leg "adapters" (the cuffs of the gloves and boots), the fingers and backs of the hands, and the soles of the boots. The metal mesh was magnetically pulled from the adapters to the other sections of the armor in less than two seconds.[76]

The Model 4 suit allowed for all sections of the suit to be stored in the torso, with an ultrasonic signal from Stark's wristwatch and ID bracelet activating a polarizing unit in the chest beam, causing the shoulder and neck rings to expand three-dimensionally, revealing the suit's sleeve and leg cuffs, which expanded as they reached the forearm and calves via memory circuits in the glove and boot cuffs, then snapped his hands and feet together. Meanwhile, the mask slid over his head from behind. This process took microseconds.[311]

The Model 8 armor and later suits[98][312][50] again required all parts of the suit to be fitted together. The Model 16 armor could be packed away compactly and flown towards Tony if necessary, quickly enveloping him.[313]

The Model 19 armor had full-body mesh made of SKIN, a liquid metal, which automatically covered the entire body once the chest piece was attached. The gloves, boots, and torso had to be put on manually.[314]

After injecting himself with Extremis, Stark was able to store the lower portion of his suit's armor in the hollows of his bones, allowing it to cover his skin at will. A signal sent from the lockchip in his arm would cause the remaining pieces of the armor to be pushed towards Tony via a magnetic field.

After losing Extremis, Tony's new armor was the Model 37, the armor was composed of user-controlled neurokinetic morphological nanoparticle beams that resided within Stark's body, and formed a fibrous, wet web of iron and platinum, which could be commanded to form any type of structure upon Stark's skin, from weaponry to clothing. [315] Once that armor was rendered inert and expelled from Stark's body, Tony used various machines to dress himself. [316] The suit could also fly towards him and envelop him incredibly quickly. [317]

After being morally inverted, Stark's new suit, composed of liquid smart metal that instantly hardened on connection with the wearer's body, featured symbiotic "building blocks", creating a psionic link between the suit and Tony, allowing the armor's power-up to be completely psionic and not dependent on technology.[194]

Superhuman Strength: He is capable of lifting up to 100 tons when wearing his armor and can reach higher levels of strength when boosted by a sufficiently more powerful source. When She-Hulk went into a great frenzy, Tony was able to knock her down with a single blow. [318] His exact strength is largely dependent on the armor he is currently wearing.
Superhuman Speed: Even when not traveling long distances, the armor allows the user to move and react at very high speeds, as shown for example when he was able to outrun Spider-Man[138] and the Human Torch.[319]
Flight: The armor can typically reach speeds in excess of Mach 10, however Iron Man has recently been depicted as being able to reach orbital escape velocities (5 miles per second) and even speeds that can outpace black holes. Use of the jet boots provides enough power to lift a load of approximately 500 tons. More recent suits are even capable of reaching warp speed.[320]
'Power Cells:' The majority of its armor is powered by a combination of solar converters, electric batteries, and an onboard generator that uses beta particle absorption as a fuel source. Current models after the Model 37 use a set of five Repulsor Tech Generators to power them. [320]

Energy Conversion Energy Recharge: The armor is also capable of absorbing and converting nearby or distant energy sources, such as heat, solar, electrical, magnetic, geothermal or kinetic energy or energy from the planet itself into electricity, or even draining energy directly into batteries for recharging. [320]
Autonomous Life Support System and Environmental Protection: The armor can be completely sealed for vacuum or underwater operations, providing its own life support, and is also protected against radiation, biological, chemical, corrosive, kinetic and electrical attacks.
Magnetism: The armor can generate magnetic fields to pull or push metal objects at will.
'Anti-Magnetism: The armor that Tony has to negate the effects of magnetism on it. This ability is often used to be immune to Magneto's powers. [321] This ability can be activated when the armor chooses the magnetism of the next wave.
'On-Board Computer: The armor has an internal onboard computer operating system that helps Stark provide strategies, background information on opponents, surroundings, status of the suit, and prevents a crash of the attack systems.
''Sensor Array: Known sensors include radar/lidar, night vision, and physiological/medical scanners that allow Stark to take and monitor other people's vital signs, including heart and brain scans. These scans also provide Stark with real-time personal physiological data. They are also capable of fully environmental scanning for atmospheric content or life forms, including astral energy projections.

Override: When necessary, the armor's systems, including force amplification, durability amplification, and repulsor intensity, can be greatly increased, bypassing fail-safe circuits and limiters. However, there is a chance that this could cause the armor's system to fail completely. An example of this mode is when Iron Man easily lifted a 16,000 ton Nuclear Reactor, flew into the sky, and threw it into the sea. He appears to have used this on the Hulk once, as the armor ends up completely inert.[322] The Override's range can be controlled, as only reaching its very limit and staying at it for too long will cause the system to fail. This range goes from a safe 800% to 3200%, to a very dangerous 5000%.

Crystallized Iron Armor: The armor has evolved from a bulky iron suit to a highly complex matrix of molecularly aligned and magnetically enhanced ultra-high carbon iron/steel hybrid alloy over layers of other ultra-high carbon alloys such as titanium alloy or tungsten/vanadium alloys reinforced with carbon nanotubes, creating a shell that is flexible, yet capable of astonishingly high strength and protection.

Enhanced Durability: His armor is very durable, able to withstand massive amounts of punishment. It can withstand large caliber bullets with ease. It can also withstand rockets, missiles, torpedoes, high-powered lasers, etc., taking little to no damage. The armor of the future was completely resistant to electricity, fire, strong impacts, energy blasts, taking zero Kelvin and even the temperatures of the Sun, even some of Thor's attacks (see Thorbuster). The suit can withstand nearly unlimited kinetic and thermal impacts, as well as most forms of radiation thanks to its refractory coating. The armor can survive anything short of a nuclear explosion at ground zero. The suit automatically protects its wearer when entering an inherently hostile environment, such as outer space or the deep sea. The armor even has specialized circuitry that protects against telepathic attacks. Tony relies heavily on his suit's defensive capabilities; when he was caught in a nuclear explosion, he was only thinking about women and completely oblivious to what was going on around him.[323]
Energy Shield: An energy shield that can protect the user from harm. It is also capable of reflecting attacks and staying in motion. At 2% power, the shield is strong enough to withstand a nuclear explosion. It is even capable of protecting its user at point-blank range from a nuclear explosion caused by a material even more radioactive than uranium, Phlogiston.[324] The suit's armor can withstand a force blast from the Spectral Mandarin's Ring, an energy beam so powerful that it can destroy the bonds between atoms and molecules,[325] and magic.[191]
Offensive Powers

Repulsor Beams: The armor's primary energy weapon. A particle beam weapon, standard equipment on the palm gauntlets, it can repel physical and energy-based attacks, traveling as a single stream or as a wide-field dispersion. The beams possess penetrating force ranging from effortlessly punching through 5 centimeters of steel to blasting a hole through a mountain. Power can be adjusted for a larger beam or a full-blown omnidirectional repulsor blast. Output power can be adjusted to fire beams generating 2 gigawatts (such as the Mark 3) all the way up to beams in the high petawatt region, as seen with the Mark 27 (with the aid of external sources). The latest version, the Mark IVa, was introduced with the Model 42 Iron Man Armor, featuring a red color.
Unibeam: A powerful reflector, capable of projecting beams across virtually the entire spectrum of light. It is also used as a powerful weapon that can destroy anything in its path. It fires a powered-up form of the Monobeam with some backup power.

Unibeam

Tri-Beam: This unique version of the Unibeam runs on direct energy from the chest plate, draining its energy quickly if not fully charged; it causes considerable recoil.
Multi-Beam: As the name suggests, Multi-Beam can fire multiple energies at the same time. It is usually used with the energy that Tony Stark has absorbed.
Pentabeam: The Pentabeam has a microwave lens projector that allows it to direct beams of electrons, protons, acoustic energy, and neutrons of several megajoules.

Pulse Bolts: Extremely powerful plasma discharges that travel with force into the distance, but implode if overloaded.
Energy Blade: Based on the same design Tony Stark used to build Captain America's energy shield, this lightsaber, emitted from his right arm, can also be flattened into a shield in his hands, or extended across the armor to encase it in a protective covering.
Pulse Barrage Pulse Barrage is one of Iron Man's standard long-range attacks. Due to its extremely low energy consumption, the pulse barrage can be a very effective attack. An enhanced red pulse barrage has the ability to penetrate through enemies and hit others behind them, and the ability to bounce off walls and hit more targets.
Smart Missiles: The Smart Missile is one that can target the weak points of a structure, object or enemy to deal maximum damage with minimal payload.
Hypervelocity Impact: The Hypervelocity program allows Tony to think and move in a much faster time frame than others, allowing him to perform faster attacks. Additionally, he can create an electric bubble if Tony goes fast enough.
Plasma Discharge: A plasma discharge is emitted when the suit comes into contact with Vibranium.
Telepathic Microscopic Tasers: Tony created this device to prevent telepathic beings from using their powers. They are stored in the armor's electrical jet. If inhaled by a telepath, the more he tries to use his psychic powers, the higher the voltage of an electrical current released into his body. It can be lethal if the telepath does not stop trying to use his powers.
