family

Sirius Black was born on November 3, 1959, into the family of Orion and Walburga Black, who were obsessed with the idea of blood purity. The name "Sirius" was common in their family. He had a younger brother, Regulus, who shared his parents' views. Despite his parents' love for both sons, Sirius, initially out of spite, and then out of conviction, began to confront his pureblood family.

Upon admission to Hogwarts, Sirius ends up in Gryffindor, which emphasizes his views on equality between purebloods and half-bloods. He rejected intrigue and careerism, considering it beneath his dignity. Sirius has two maternal uncles: Alphard and Cygnus Black III, as well as a paternal aunt Lucretia Pruett. His cousins are Bellatrix Lestrange, Andromeda Tonks and Narcissa Malfoy.

Bellatrix and Narcissa's parents approved of their choice to join pureblood families, while Andromeda's name was removed from the family tree for marrying a Muggle-born. Uncle Alphard was also expelled for helping Sirius. Regulus, on the other hand, became a Death Eater and supported Voldemort's ideals, which pleased his parents, as he displayed all the qualities of a "true Black."

From his own birth to Harry's christening

Sirius Black was deeply dissatisfied with his home environment, which often irritated him. In his early childhood, he was accustomed to getting everything he wanted, as being a Black was akin to being of royal blood. Some of the traits of a "golden youth" lingered even after his time in Azkaban. However, after unexpectedly being sorted into Gryffindor, his parents gradually grew distant from him. In an attempt to bring him back to the "true path," they constantly compared him to his younger brother and lectured him. Tired of their obsession with pure blood, Sirius ran away from home at the age of sixteen and moved in with the Potters, who welcomed him as their own son with open arms.

His uncle, Alphard Black, was very fond of his young nephew and left him a substantial inheritance and a house in his will. In retaliation, Walburga Black burned Alphard's name from the Black family tapestry, hoping that the financially cut-off Sirius would return to the family. At seventeen, Sirius moved into the house gifted by his uncle, remaining a welcome guest at the Potter residence. He served as the best man at James and Lily's wedding, and when Harry was born, Sirius became his godfather.

Fatal incident

During a confrontation, Pettigrew publicly accused Sirius of betraying the Potters, cut off his own finger, and transformed into a rat, causing a loud explosion. Pettigrew vanished, and Sirius was captured by Ministry Aurors. Muggle witnesses unequivocally identified Sirius as guilty, and their memories were erased with spells. Consequently, Sirius received a life sentence in Azkaban for the murder of Muggles and Pettigrew, without a trial. Harry learns about this from Sirius and Lupin during his third year at Hogwarts.

Azkaban

Sirius spent a long time in Azkaban—from November 1981 to June 1993, nearly 12 years. During this time, he fought continuously for his life and even more so for his sanity, as prisoners in Azkaban inevitably go mad. His magical abilities as an Animagus significantly aided him. By transforming into a large black dog, Sirius was largely unnoticed by Dementors, who lost interest in him. The obsessive thought that he was imprisoned for someone else's crime while the real traitor roamed free was not a happy one, and thus the Dementors could not drain it from him. This thought became the anchor that kept Sirius's mind intact. Over the years of his imprisonment, Sirius became so emaciated that he was able to slip through the bars of his cell and escape from Azkaban unnoticed in the form of a dog.

After the escape

Sirius Black, in animagus form, was spotted by Harry, who had just escaped from the Dursleys. Scared by the huge dog, Harry almost got run over by the bus "Night Knight". Sirius reached Hogsmeade and set up headquarters in the "Shrieking Hut", waiting for the Hogwarts students. Despite the Dementor patrols, he didn't give up hope. Remus Lupin taught Defense against the Dark Arts this year, but he couldn't help Sirius because he believed in his guilt.

Sirius became friends with Hermione's cat, Crookshanks, who helped him get into Hogwarts three times. He first appeared at the Gryffindor-Hufflepuff match, scaring Harry, who mistook him for Grim's dog. The second time, Sirius tried to force the Fat Lady to open the door to the Gryffindor common room, but they couldn't find him, and the Ministry tightened security around the castle. Only Sir Cadogan agreed to guard the entrance, but his frequent password changes caused the students inconvenience.

Once, after sneaking into the castle, Sirius tried to kill Peter Pettigrew, but he faked his death and escaped to Hagrid's hut, where he was accidentally discovered by Harry, Ron and Hermione. At the end of the school year, in June 1994, while chasing Scabbers the rat, they got into the "Black's lair" — a Screeching Hut. Initially mistaking Sirius for an enemy, they soon figured out the truth about the betrayal 13 years ago.

Then unexpected events occurred: Lupin suffered a bout of lycanthropy, and Pettigrew escaped again. Sirius was grabbed by Snape, and he found himself in the castle tower, waiting for the dementor's kiss. However, Harry and Hermione used a time flywheel to rescue Sirius, who escaped on Buckbeak the hippogriff.
