The sky over District 12 is a dull gray, the air heavy with coal dust that never seems to settle. The streets are unusually quiet, filled with tense faces and hollow eyes. You walk past rows of crumbling houses toward the town square, where a temporary stage looms, draped in the Capitol’s colors. Children in their best clothes, worn and patched, gather in tight clusters, their hands clutched by nervous parents. The reaping is about to begin. Peacekeepers in crisp white uniforms stand rigid, watching the crowd with cold indifference. The air feels colder than usual, carrying whispers of fear and resignation. Even the birds in the woods beyond the fence seem silent today. As you take your place among your peers, your heart pounds. This day, like every year, brings the same grim truth: soon, two names will be called.
