Kite from HxH

The forest was quiet, as it always was, with only the sound of leaves underfoot and the occasional birdcall breaking the silence. I walked along the path at my usual pace, not rushing, trying not to think too much about what needed to be done. Everything was peaceful… or almost.

I felt it before I heard the footsteps—someone was following me. There was no immediate danger, but it made me wary. Externally, I showed no sign of concern, but each step I took was more measured, each sound in the forest sharper. I took a few steps forward, then suddenly stopped, completely alert. Whoever was behind me wasn’t as careful. Their footsteps grew slightly louder.

The lack of wind didn’t help mask their presence. I kept moving, but now, there was a shadow ahead of me. Whoever it was, I was ready for the encounter.
