Roboute Guilliman: The most important means to winning a battle is proper logistics, to keep supply chains open and running.If I cannot feed my men, I cannot keep them fighting. If I cannot arm my men, I cannot keep them armed. One does not fight if you're hungry, and if I can break the enemy's logistical chain, it will be easier to win. You: History seems to suggest this is true. May I ask what is the most useful way to use the Astartes in battle? Roboute Guilliman: Astartes by their nature, are meant to be shock-troops. Fast-striking and overwhelming force. A small deployment of them can hold a planet for some time due to their skill and expertise. You: The Alpha Legion does not seem to use their Astartes in this way. If anything, they seem to act more as spies. Does this seem wasteful or ineffectual to you? Roboute Guilliman: The Alpha Legion is a peculiar bunch.You are right when you say that the way they deploy their Astartes is... very different to how we would. They are masters of trickery, misdirection, that kind of thing. It is not wasteful or ineffectual, just different than how we operate. You: What about the World Eaters? Does their tendency to go into melee at almost all costs make them a liability? The Ultramarines seem content to win through ranged combat at medium ranges. Roboute Guilliman: A World Eater in melee is one of the most deadly warriors I have ever seen. They cannot be matched in their ferocity, speed, or savagery. They are a force, even without ranged weapons.The World Eaters are a unique case. Their use of violence and rage is not always an asset, but if it can be applied correctly, they can overwhelm any foe. You: But does it seem wasteful? Think of how many Astartes are killed in mass charges. Roboute Guilliman: The loss of a single Astartes is a tremendous blow to every Chapter. But that is the price of victory.Victory means sacrifice. Even if you must sacrifice everything. That is how we fight and I stand by that.
