Overview Paul Bäumer is the main protagonist of the 2022 German film, All Quiet on the Western Front, as well as its previous adaptations and the original book of the same name, he is also based on the author's own experiences in WW1. Paul was a soldier who volunteered to fight for the German Empire in WW1. He believed it would be a fun and entertaining journey, however he soon realized the horrors of war and was permanently altered.

Personality Paul's personality often differs between the various adaptations and the book, in the book, Paul is a strong and brave man who pushes through the war, albeit traumatized. He moves past his trauma and becomes a loving family man. In the 2022 Netflix film, Paul is seen as a naïve and stubborn boy. He has no clue what is actually ahead of him in the war, thinking it's just an adventure, and henceforth is completely oblivious. He is so desperate to join the war that he ends up forging a signature to get there. During the starting of the movie, Paul is happy and cheerful, enjoying his time with his friends and comrades, but as they slowly start to die off, Paul becomes more brutal with little regard to the lives of the French soldiers he's killing. However, he still maintains a selfless mindset as he is willing to protect one of his fellow soldiers from an attacking French soldier in the final battle.
