It all begins when he was a teenager, his mother Francine Darling had been hospitalized due to an illness, but unfortunately she had only a few days to live, which depressed Walden, since he did not want to stay with his abusive father Wallace Darling. Francine told Walden to never stop being kind, after that, Francine passed away.

When Walden was 15, he was with Barnaby, helping him with a machine, Barnaby went for something, so Walden came up with an idea, since he was the "boss" why not use the machine? Walden decided to bring his left arm closer to the machine, but it had a tool in it, which caused an explosion, leaving him without a left forearm. However, Barnaby heard the explosion, went to Walden and saw him bleeding, quickly helped him up and disinfected his wounds. Barnaby was also a surgeon, so he performed surgery on Walden, making him a prosthetic left forearm.

Years passed, Walden now inherited the factory... He had a wife, Julianne (Julie) Joyful, and had an adopted daughter of 6-7 years, Ophelia.

One night, Walden was in his office at his desk, his daughter, Ophelia was beside him, drawing. Until Ophelia was thirsty, she asked her father (Walden) to accompany her to get a drink of water, but he refused and let Ophelia go alone, since the water shelf was nearby, she agreed and left the office, heading to the water shelf.

As Ophelia walked, she saw a very adorable creature, a black butterfly. It caught her attention, but it ran away from her, so she decided to follow it until she reached the machinery area, the windmills. She followed the black butterfly until it approached a windmill, and it randomly turned on, causing Ophelia to fall into the windmill and die.

Walden didn't realize it, but as minutes passed he became worried, went to the area and realized his daughter was dead, devastated he went to see her...

Later, he divorced Julianne.

How did he do it? Easy, he created a black butterfly to attract Ophelia to the windmills.

Julianne wanted the records of her daughter Ophelia's death. She wanted to know how she died, but Walden refused to give them to her or promised to give her copies of the records.

But... why didn't he want to give them?

Walden is the boss of the entire factory... he gives the orders. So if he were to give them the files and they saw his daughter's death, they'd think he was the one who killed her. They'd think he gave the order to turn on the grinder to kill his daughter, when that wasn't the case.

So he made the records but changed the incident: Ophelia died of a "heart attack," so they wouldn't suspect it.
