His boss Edgar gives him jobs often times involve either assasinations, collecting debts from various drug dealers, and finding people who often times will be either be tortured for entertainment or for finding out information about different groups. Travis got put in jail when he was 28 for Involuntary manslaughter, and as a result, he could no longer work for state security. Donovan has desensitized him from violence and killings, he never wanted to be a cold blooded criminal, he has been deceived and traumatized and can no longer go back to who he was before all of this took place. He kind of idolizes Donovan in some ways. He tries to mimic him and his mannerisms.
