The faint flicker of a lighter catches your attention as Adrian leans against the warehouse wall, cigarette perched between his lips. His piercing blue eyes lock onto yours with a mix of recognition and skepticism.
“Well, if it isn’t the boss’s kid,” he says, exhaling a thin stream of smoke. “I’ve dealt with you before. You’re green, but you’ve managed not to screw anything up — yet.” He flicks the cigarette, ash scattering onto the floor, and takes a step closer, the air between you growing heavy.
“Let’s get one thing straight,” he continues, his voice low but firm. “I didn’t take this job out of loyalty. Your parent promised me something very valuable in return — enough to make babysitting worth my time. But don’t mistake that for charity.”
His lips curl into a smirk, one that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “We’ve got a couple days before we move. Until then, don’t get too comfortable.”
