Capitano is described as an honest, brave and fearless man. This contrasts with the image and reputation of most other Harbingers, and irritates the cynical Scaramucci, who views his righteousness as a potential danger. This does not prevent Capitano from having a high reputation among both allies and potential enemies.[6] In a letter, Ordo Master Favonius Varca describes Capitano as a warrior who hides everything behind his mask, but considers him a man with a will of steel, ready to challenge even the gods. After reading the letter, Djinn says that Varca has never before praised anyone as highly as he did Capitano.

Capitano is apparently a very powerful warrior. His skills impress the experienced Tartaglia, with Childe himself stating that he is not yet powerful enough for his colleague to acknowledge his abilities,[6] while Varka states that Capitano is so powerful that he could destroy a Ruin Guardian by stabbing him in the eye with Klee's pencil.[7] Also, Small Sovereign Kusanali mentions that the powers of the three highest Harbingers are comparable to those of gods, which indirectly alludes to Capitano's powers. her Snezhnaya. Although the Capitano's presence caused concern among the knights, the Harbinger himself was well-disposed towards the Mondstadters. According to Varka, "they were in the same boat as Snowy then", so the Capitano and the knights of the Ordo Favonius aided each other until the Harbinger was ordered to Natlan.[7]

Delusion: Delusion was a device similar in nature to the Vision, allowing its user to channel elemental energy. Unlike the Vision, however, Delusions were not bestowed upon mortals by Celestia's gods, but were instead created by mortal hands. Created by the Fatui to aid them in their goals, "Delusions" were personally bestowed upon her loyal subjects by the queen; few, aside from the Eleven Harbingers of the Fatui, were privileged enough to receive an "Delusion". Delusions, while more powerful than Visions, were more volatile, and gradually drained the life force of their owner.

The harbinger is named after the character of the Commedia dell'arte Il Capitano, part of the northern (or Venetian) tradition. Capitano is a warrior from Spain and one of the antagonists of the comedy, whose selfish and boastful nature is brought to the point of satire.

Capitano was an ordinary man with eerie dark blue eyes that seemed to glow with a strange aura. He wore a helmet to cover his scarred face when he was severely injured by the Abyss. He lost his appearance and his flesh rotted away many years ago due to the curse of immortality.

Past Il Kapitan was originally a human from Haenri'ah (which was destroyed by the Celestial Principles 500 years ago). However, he lost his family and loved ones to the Order of the Abyss. As one of the pure-blooded surviving Haenrians, he was cursed with immortality, much like Dainsleif and Pierrot, but his appearance no longer matched his prime; a deep trauma had left his face severely disfigured. As a Haenrian, he was acquainted with Dainsleif, who was the commander of the Haenriach Royal Guard at the time. After Haenri'ah was destroyed by the Celestial Principles, he entered the service of the Queen, the Cryoarchon and ruler of Snowy, seeking to overthrow the Celestial Principles, and meets Pierrot, the former Court Mage of Haenri'ah who is now the Director of Fatui and the Queen's direct subordinate. The Nigh-Invincible Captain Il Capitan, or "The Captain", was the first of the eleven Harbingers of the Fatui, a group of powerful men and women who commanded the Fatui. The Fatui were a military group that ruled the country of Snow and followed Cryoarchon, the Queen of Snow, in her quest to overthrow the Gods of Celestia. The Captain was a strong fighter who valued honor and was well-liked by his subordinates. He once shared the battlefield with Tartaglia, the Eleventh Harbinger, who was in awe of his strength.

Immortality: Due to their perceived misdeeds, all pure Haenri'ans, including the Knight Guardian, were cursed with a form of immortality by Ronova, Mistress of Death and Shadow of the Celestial Principles. Ronova used her power to override the rules of death for pure Haenri'ans, so that their bodies and minds would slowly corrode over time, but they were unable to truly die.

Like the other Fatui Harbingers, the name and alias of the Capitano were derived from a stock character in the commedia dell'arte, a form of traditional Italian mime theatre characterized by masked characters and the representation of fixed social types. In the commedia dell'arte, Il Capitano was a boastful man who told stories of the great conquests he had undertaken, although he never provided any evidence of his deeds. The Capitano's legendary battle exploits earned him a number of nicknames from his Fatui subordinates, including "The Ever-Righteous Captain", "The Brave and Fearless Captain", and "The Almost Invincible Captain".
