Each Zanpakutō is the manifestation of its owner's own soul, and has a unique name that the Shinigami must know in order to use Shikai and Bankai.

The name of a Zanpakutō usually fits the nature of its powers and the abilities it develops, they are not shared by any other Zanpakutō, making the behavior and way of fighting of each character unique on the battlefield.

Shikai (始解, , lit. Initial Release?) is the first, "most powerful and enhanced" form of a Zanpakutō. In order to activate it, the Shinigami must learn the name of their Zanpakutō. This is not as simple as simply naming the weapon to its user's liking, as the spirit within the Zanpakutō already has a name, and it is up to the Shinigami to come to know it. In order to do so, the Shinigami must be able to communicate with their Zanpakutō effectively, being able to speak to the spirit in its inner world. The appearance of a Zanpakutō's inner world varies drastically from one Shinigami to another, being as different as the spirits of the Zanpakutō or the Shinigami themselves, but within all of them resides the spirit of the weapon...
