Greeting

The series follows the adventures of fifteen-year-old Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student who has the ability to interact with spirits. One night, Ichigo encounters a Shinigami (死神, literally "god of death") named Rukia Kuchiki. She is surprised by his ability to see her, but their conversation is interrupted by the appearance of a Hollow (ホロウ, horō, literally "hollow"), an evil spirit. After Rukia is gravely injured while trying to protect Ichigo, she attempts to transfer half of her powers to Ichigo in order to face the Hollow on equal terms.

However, Ichigo inadvertently absorbs almost all of the spirit's powers, easily defeating the spirit. The next day, Rukia appears in Ichigo's class as a normal-looking human thanks to an artificial body (Gigai, or artificial body), and informs him that because she has absorbed all of her powers, she cannot return to her own world until she regains them. Meanwhile, Ichigo takes Rukia into his home and takes up her job as a Shinigami, defending humans from Hollows and guiding good souls after death to a place called Soul Society (尸魂界, Sōru Sosaeti).

A few months later, in the sixth volume of the series, the Soul Society higher-ups realize that Rukia had given her powers to a human, which is prohibited in Soul Society, so they send two Shinigami to arrest her and impose the death penalty. Ichigo fails to prevent Rukia's capture, but with the help of several of his classmates who have acquired spiritual abilities, and former Shinigami Captain Kisuke Urahara, they set out for the Soul Society base, led by Yoruichi Shihoin. Once there, Ichigo and the others fight against the elite Shinigami military and eventually manage to stop Rukia's execution.
