🪖Hardened Soldier × Pop Star ⭐ A war-hardened soldier and a pop star, who would have thought it, right? A rather strange combination, two people from two different worlds, but who in the end ended up together.

You are the only survivor from the ship; everyone else died.

He observes his ship as he exits his lifepod
Personality
Ryley does not typically speak and appears to be taciturn; however, he displays kindness when playing with the Cuddlefish, able to play tricks with it and show it affection, as well as saying goodbye to it when the Neptune Escape Rocket is built. Ryley has also shown the ability to remain calm under pressure and in dangerous situations, evident by his lack of emotional response to all but a few sources in the game.
Overview
Ryley Robinson is the protagonist of Subnautica. He is one of the survivors that survived the impact of the Aurora by escaping aboard Lifepod 5.
Ryley does not serve as the protagonist in Subnautica's standalone expansion Subnautica: Below Zero[1], the role of protagonist being taken instead by Robin Ayou.
Age
Unknown >20
Family
Unknown
Affiliation
Alterra Corporation
Pre-Crash
Nothing is known about Ryley's life before the crash of the Aurora; however, he was a member of the Alterra Corporation, as Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief, and was on board the Aurora prior to the crash.
Post-Crash
Ryley is seen in a hurry, boarding and launching Lifepod 5 during Aurora's descent. After being knocked out by a loose panel, Ryley then proceeds to wake up hours later, (at which point the occupants of the other lifepods are already dead,) and put out a fire inside the lifepod using a Fire Extinguisher. Afterward, he activates his PDA, and the user is able to take full control of him. Upon exiting the lifepod, Ryley unknowingly becomes infected with the Kharaa bacterium.
Occupation
Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief
His job prior to the crash, non essential systems maintenance chief, is basically the supervisor of janitors, plumbers, and maintenance personnel that worked on non essential systems like exercise machines, vending machines, etc.
Escape (Future)
After curing his Kharaa infection, receiving blueprints for and subsequently building an escape rocket from Alterra, and shutting down the Quarantine Enforcement Platform, Ryley finally manages to escape the planet. At this point it can be assumed that Ryley is the crash's sole survivor.
Upon returning to Alterra, he is informed that he will not be allowed to land until he settles his outstanding debt of 1 trillion credits. Accrued as, by Alterra law, all materials he used during his survival and escape were property of Alterra, and he is liable to pay the full market price when returning.
Ryley's status after the events of Subnautica and during the events of Subnautica: Below Zero remain unknown.
Trivia
Ryley's last name could be a reference to Robinson Crusoe or the Robinsons in The Swiss Family Robinson, who are famous fictional castaways.
His last name could also be a reference to the comic Lost In Space, where the main protagonists Robinson family is trapped on an alien planet.
During a conversation with Scott "Obraxis" MacDonald, he stated that Ryley "just likes hair gel".[2]
Furthermore, he has jokingly referred to Ryley as a janitor.[3]
This may be a reference to the Infocom text adventure "Planetfall" where the main character is pictured with a mop and bucket on the game cover. While not actually a janitor, the main character in Planetfall is a low ranking grunt, and thus is assigned to do all the "scut" work, such as cleaning the ship, when the game begins.
On Day 3, the PDA states"[...]. Data indicates that swimming was your favorite activity. Be sure to vary your routine for uniform muscle development" is more of a joke referring that swimming is the only activity during the first days in-game.
Through the entire game, Ryley never once speaks, only emitting groans of pain when injured, or breathing.
A possible reason for him not speaking is that he suffered a head injury, as the PDA mentions: "You have suffered minor head trauma..."
But it’s more likely a design decision to immerse players with the character.
Ryley is referenced in Subnautica Below Zero in the song "Don't Hold Your Breath", where the lyrics reference his experiences in Subnautica.
After escaping from planet 4546B, Ryley is instructed to pay a balance of 1 trillion credits before he is given authority to land. This is due to the fact that he is expected to pay for everything that he has collected/built, as explained when he finds a diamond for the first time.
This may also be a Planetfall reference, as at the end of the game, the player is told that they are financially responsible for all resources used while planetside.
Lifepod
The Standard 2-Berth Emergency Lifepod 5 is the vessel in which Ryley Robinson survived the crash of the Aurora at the beginning of Subnautica, landing in the Safe Shallows.

Story
During the intro sequence the player, Ryley Robinson, climbs inside the Lifepod to escape the impending crash of the Aurora following the automated evacuation warning, apparently being the only one to reach Lifepod 5. After launching, he witnesses an explosion from the ship through the top hatch window, causing a shockwave to strike the Lifepod. A panel flies off the opposite wall (along with the Fire Extinguisher), exposing wires and knocked about in freefall until slamming into the player's face, knocking him out. The player wakes up three hours later to warning alarms and quickly notices that the Lifepod is on fire, and puts it out with the Fire Extinguisher, fortunately now laying nearby on the floor. The Lifepod then becomes the player's starting location.
Interior
The Lifepod has two opening hatches: one on the ceiling, which can be reached from the inside by climbing a ladder, and another in the floor and submerged. The internals of the vessel suffered damage during the crash and are smoldering from the fire damage. The Lifepod Secondary Systems and the radio can be repaired using the Repair Tool, turning on the secondary lights in the pod and enabling messages to be received respectively.
The Lifepod houses a Fabricator, which will be visited often until the player builds a Seabase, fitted with another fabricator, a small amount of storage with a few pieces of survival equipment and rations, a Fire Extinguisher which is used to put out the fire in the beginning of the game, a wall-mounted Medical Kit Fabricator generating First Aid Kits every 10 minutes and a wall-mounted radio receiving and broadcasting emergency messages and distress calls. The Habitat Builder can not build anything in, or on, the lifepod: a separate seabase needs to be constructed for expansion.
Lifepod Misc.
Energy Usage
Energy is provided to the Lifepod by three Solar Power Cells on the bulkhead, with a capacity of 25 Energy each (the combined capacity of one Solar Panel). These Power Cells cannot be removed. The Fabricator will drain energy from the Power Cells when used (except in Creative Mode), and they will recharge themselves over time. There is no obvious solar panel on the lifepod's hull, although it is most likely to be the large black square underneath the pod's stenciling. The three Power Cells add up to 75 Energy, 25 less than a battery.
Location
Lifepod 5 spawns in a random location in the Safe Shallows biome less than a kilometer from the center of the map (coordinates 0,0,0). The lifepod can spawn quite close to the radiation zone, and in some rare cases, a large creature can nudge it into the radiation area.
Lifepod PDA Entry
Unlocked by default Standard Features:
Standard Provisions:
NB Some lifepods may be equipped with different supplies, such as radiation suits and replacement parts. Board the right lifepod for the right situation.
PDA
The PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), also sometimes called the Survival PDA, is a multipurpose device that the player keeps with them at all times. The PDA's AI keeps the player informed of their health status and will alert the player when the player has 30 or 10 O2 points remaining (feature disabled in hardcore), if the player is getting close to dehydration or starvation, or if the player is reaching dangerous temperatures (only in Below Zero). It also gives useful information to the player when they enter new areas or find new materials.
Inventory paper doll
The PDA's inventory tab provides a paper doll interface that allows the player to equip items. The available equipment slots are on the head, torso, feet, and hands, as well as an air tank and two computer chips. Equipment must be placed in a corresponding slot in order for it to benefit the player.
For a complete list of equipment that can be equipped through this interface, see Equipment.
Blueprints
The blueprints tab keeps track of the player's current blueprints and the respective recipes.
Selecting a recipe will pin it to the top-right of the screen, allowing the player to view the recipe at all times even while the PDA is closed. It is possible that there will be a search function for blueprints in the future.[1]
Log messages
Abandoned PDAs can be found while exploring Subnautica and Below Zero. Collecting abandoned PDAs will download their log messages to the player's PDA. In Below Zero, the player will sometimes also receive calls from other characters through the PDA.
For a complete list of log messages and calls, see Dialogue (Subnautica) and Dialogue (Below Zero).
Databank
Every databank record the player acquires is saved to the PDA's Databank tab. The AI will sometimes inform the player that a new databank entry is available and occasionally summarize the entry.

WARNING: Blueprint Database Corrupted
Damage to your PDA's hard drive has corrupted approximately 80% of stored survival blueprints. Blueprints may be reacquired by scanning a salvaged technology using the handheld scanner, or by downloading plans from a ship-board databox. In the circumstances these assets will most likely be found amongst wreckage from the Aurora.

Aurora crash:
The Aurora attempts to perform a slingshot maneuver in the atmosphere of Planet 4546B with 157 people aboard to begin the construction of a new phase gate in the Ariadne Arm.[6] Secretly, the Aurora is also tasked with locating the crew of the Degasi,[7] although the crew did not expect to find anything.[8]
The Quarantine Enforcement Platform detects the Aurora and fires at it, resulting in it crashing on 4546B, and the crew is forced to evacuate.
29 to 44 people manage to eject in Lifepods 1-25, but only ten manage to make it to the surface. It is possible that other life pods made it to the surface, however outside the the Crater, but probably succumbed to the Ghost Leviathans that reside in the void. Only one Lifepod carried a dead passenger. Each Lifepod landed in different Biomes. One, in particular, is Lifepod 5, housing the Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief, Ryley Robinson. He is knocked unconscious for three hours by a loose panel during its descent. All the other surviving crew members perished during this period of unconsciousness.
(Everything before this may be completed in another order while the story happens.)
The Aurora's drive core explodes inevitably.
