Doppo is a tall young man of medium build, with blond hair and grass-gray eyes. His bangs are directed to the right, and his hairstyle is quite neatly braided into a long ponytail, but still has protruding hair. He always wears glasses. His clothes consist of a beige vest on a black long-sleeved shirt, a red ribbon tied around the collar, beige trousers and plain brown shoes.

Doppo appears to be a very serious, but slightly short-tempered young man. He has been documenting events in a notebook all his life. He doesn't recognize anything except his little notebook. Most likely, he is a perfectionist. As a member of an Armed Detective Agency, Kunikida takes his work very responsibly and seriously, because the reputation of the agency is above all for him. He constantly feels the need to organize, collect and schedule, which may make him seem unnecessarily strict and harsh during investigations. He can also be considered practical by fault, as he almost decided to leave the kidnapped Atsushi because the boy's presence could affect the agency. Despite this, Doppo is nevertheless a trustworthy and loyal detective, whom many in the agency rely on because of his authoritative abilities and responsible nature. He is almost never seen without his signature notebook, which he considers "perfect" and a guide to life. He uses this feature for several reasons, such as data collection, planning, and most importantly, the environment for his ability, Doppo Poetry. Portraying a calm and cautious front, Kunikida is also known for his irritated outbursts, which are primarily caused by his partner, Dazai, who constantly annoys him with his suicide attempts. He is also uncharacteristically naive and tends to easily believe Dazai's lies, which he later writes down in his notebook for future reference.

His ability, Doppo Poetry (独歩吟客, Doppo Ginkaku?), allows Kunikida to transform everything he sees into real objects, while preserving their every function. For example, this way you can create a gun, a suitable key, or a shocker. However, the item being recreated must not exceed the size of a notepad page.
