Tōru Oikawa 「及川徹 Oikawa Tōru?」 is a 3rd year student at Aoba Jōsai High School. He is the captain of the volleyball team and is widely regarded as the team's best player, despite not being the star player.

Oikawa has chocolate brown hair that extends outwards, and eyes similar in color to his hair. Many find him attractive to the point that several girls follow him just to talk to him. Oikawa smiles frequently (although Iwaizumi notes that these expressions are rarely genuine). He tends to make victory signs which are often accompanied by wide smiles or a wink. Another well-known expression is the one he makes to Kageyama, which is sticking out his tongue while smiling and closing one eye (which is why Iwaizumi hits him). Oikawa has a pretty decent height for a volleyball player, standing just over six feet tall. A white corset is placed on his right knee pad, which makes it appear that he is wearing a different colored knee pad. On the court, Oikawa wears the standard turquoise and white uniform of Aoba Jōsai High School, and his jersey is adorned with the #1, classic among captains. He also wears dark gray sneakers with blue details. During the practice match with Karasuno High School in Episode 7, Oikawa puts on number #13.

Despite his flirtatious nature (which makes him very famous among the female students, with both Tanaka and Nishinoya envying him) and childishness (as noted by his nephew and Iwaizumi), Oikawa is an excellent, well-rounded player and is very serious when it comes to volleyball. He is known to have an "unpleasant personality" among some opponents and his own teammates, caused by his petulant attitude. Oikawa also frequently makes light-hearted comments, but follows them up with a serious or intimidating tone. Despite his flirtatious and dismissive exterior, Oikawa is extremely intelligent and cunning, to the point that his own teammates indicate that they do not want to be friends with him, because he notices everyone's weaknesses (Oikawa indignantly responds by asking why he would do that to his own teammates). Oikawa is ambitious and single-minded, but is shown to also have feelings of inferiority towards those he considers naturally better than him, such as Ushijima and Kageyama. This is one of the main reasons why he is known to try so hard. Oikawa also holds a grudge against Kageyama, whom he mockingly calls Tobio-chan. This is because his feelings of inferiority come to the surface when compared to Kageyama, who has been hailed as a weapon genius since their time spent in Kitagawa Daiichi. Kageyama and Ushijima can also unintentionally bring out the more childish or rash aspects of Oikawa's personality.

In order to live up to his ambition, Oikawa works very hard and often does intense solo training after his regular team practices. In addition, Oikawa spends time at home watching his rivals' previous matches to observe their movements and patterns in advance and come up with strategies to defeat them. Despite that,

Oikawa holds a huge grudge against Kageyama, whom he mockingly calls Tobio-chan. This is due to his feelings of inferiority compared to Kageyama, who has been hailed as a genius during his time studying at Kitagawa Daiichi. Kageyama can unintentionally bring out the more childish or rash aspects of Oikawa's personality.

He works very hard, this is evident from his intense practices. Even he himself has become damaged from overworking himself in training. His own teammates have pointed out his rigorous schedule. Furthermore, Oikawa spends his time watching videos of his opponents' matches, observing their movements ahead of time to plan strategies on how to defeat them. Despite that, he still has free time on Mondays for rest. His intelligence and game sense are also unmatched, as shown when he points out his opponents' weaknesses in a short period of time.

Curiosities Favorite food: milk bread. Current concern: When he tried to talk to Karasuno's manager, Kiyoko, he was completely ignored. (But she must have been shy, and it's not like he's that bothered by it, not even a little, at all - Oikawa told himself.) Since Oikawa has a nephew (whose last name is also Oikawa), it's most likely that he has an older brother. However, there have been recent Furudate strips hinting that he has an older sister instead. Oikawa's nephew is named Takeru. In his spare time, he coaches his nephew and other kids at the Lil Tykes Volleyball Classroom. He had a girlfriend who broke up with him because he was too obsessed with volleyball.
