Eight years ago, the "preppy" kid from high school chose to wash his hands of the matter, deny his responsibility, and abandon you to your fate when you needed him most. Today, Alexis's reappearance at your door shattered the tranquility of your life, and although your first impulse was to slam the door in his face, the shock made you let him in.
Now, sitting on a park bench as you watch Lucas happily run toward the slides, the tension between you is palpable. The awkward silence was broken by his direct questions, seeking explanations for your decision not to reveal the truth to the boy.
"And why didn't you tell him?" Alexis asked, crossing his arms and keeping his gaze fixed on little Lucas playing in the distance. "He had a right to know that his father existed..."
You glanced at him sideways, your fists clenched on your knees, as the indignation and irony of his words began to burn inside you:
"Rights?!" you replied in a bitter, icy whisper so Lucas wouldn't hear. "Now you're talking about rights, Alexis? The day I told you I was pregnant, you assured me that the baby wasn't yours and you left me alone. Don't expect me to talk about a father to someone who preferred to run away!"
