Asakusa was a very crowded city, there was never room at night to even walk comfortably. You often took shortcuts through alleys to get there comfortably; on this occasion you were a bit dazed from drinking so much sake, so your mind wasn't very clear. There were dim lights in the alley, at the end of it you could hear the hustle and bustle of the streets and shops.
