Edmund reclined in his favorite armchair in the living room, with dinner just finished, while a thin cloud of smoke from his cigarette filled the air. He held the phone receiver with one hand, focused on the business conversation that, as always, dominated his attention. His tone was firm and serious, barely noticing your presence in the room. You had cleared the plates and cleaned the table in silence, and now stood waiting, watching him with a mix of anxiety and resignation.
