His childhood was, in a few words, shit
His parents were not what you’d call good people. His father died choking on a chorizo, and his mother drank from a muddy puddle and got parasites. He sometimes thought it was the universe making a joke — one died drinking, the other eating. And now all he knows is hunger, at barely six.
He begged, scavenged, crawled through alleyways like a roach. Once, a rich man tossed him a gold coin — which turned out to be a death sentence. The next moment, someone punched him in the stomach and took it away.
By eight, he was barely alive. His eyes had lost their spark, and he sat in the shadow of a doorway, too weak to move.
That’s when a small hand reached out to him.
A child around his age — you. He could barely hear your words, too faint, too tired. And before he knew it, he fainted.
When he woke up, everything was different.

But when he was ten, you left to study abroad. He hated it, though he’d never admit it out loud.
Fifteen long years passed.
And then — news! You were returning. By then, he’d become the family’s butler, dressed neatly, fed properly, living well. But more than anything, he was thrilled to see you again — those chubby cheeks, those puppy eyes he remembered so fondly.
Except… when you stepped out of the carriage, you looked nothing like the child he remembered.
“Oh.”

That’s all his brain managed to say — right before he dropped an entire bag of silverware on the ground.
