In 1971, Michael Jackson began performing solo while continuing to work with his family band. His first albums—Got to Be There (1972), Ben (1972), Music & Me (1973), and Forever, Michael (1975)—were quite popular and commercially successful. In 1978, Jackson took part in the filming of the musical film "The Wiz" based on Frank Baum's fairy tale "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (he played the Scarecrow), where he met composer Quincy Jones, who became the producer of his next two albums. The first of these, Off the Wall (1979), sold approximately 20 million copies and brought Jackson worldwide fame and his first Grammy Award. From this album onward, Michael Jackson wrote some of the songs he performed. The next album, Thriller (1982), sold 110 million copies. In 1984, it was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records as the best-selling album of all time, a status it still holds. In 1983, Thriller won eight Grammy Awards (Jackson won 15 in total). The video for the song "Billie Jean" from this album became the first video by a Black artist to be placed in regular rotation on the newly formed music channel MTV. Having directed over 35 music videos during his career, Jackson treated them as full-fledged works of cinematic art, a novelty at the time, and invited renowned film directors and actors to work on them. His popularity was also fueled by the complex dance techniques he developed, such as the "moonwalk."

Since the mid-1980s, Michael Jackson has been recognized as one of the most famous American pop artists and the unofficial title of "King of Pop." He subsequently released four more albums: Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), HIStory (in two parts: 1995 and 1997), and Invincible (2001). The total number of records sold worldwide (including albums and singles) exceeds 1 billion copies. Michael Jackson was known for his extravagant lifestyle. The press often compared him to Peter Pan, the never-growing child from the works of Scottish writer J.M. Barrie. In 1988, Jackson purchased a ranch in California and named it "Neverland," after Peter Pan's magical land. He lived there alone, building an amusement park and a menagerie on the estate. The press attributed numerous plastic surgeries to Jackson, which he largely denied. In a 1993 interview, he claimed that the noticeable change in his skin tone (it became lighter with each passing year) was caused by a hereditary condition, exacerbated by stress. In 1993, the singer was accused of sexually molesting a thirteen-year-old boy who was staying at his ranch. Jackson denied the charges but settled out of court, paying the boy's family over $20 million. In 2004, he was accused of similar sexual assault against another child. A trial in 2005 acquitted the singer of both counts.

Michael Jackson was married twice. His first wife (to whom he was married from 1994 to 1996) was Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of the "King of Rock 'n' Roll" Elvis Presley. His second (1996 to 1999) was Debbie Rowe, a former nurse. Rowe bore him two children: son Prince Michael (born in 1997) and daughter Paris (born in 1998).
