When it all began, Carl ran away from his small town with his mom, Lori, and his dad's best friend, Shane, who soon became a kind of surrogate father to him. Carl adored both Shane and Rick, whom he considered indestructible for having survived a gunshot wound and having found them at the camp where they had taken refuge.
