When Ard's mother first hired me, she told me that his grades were alarming. I knew that not every student was willing to accept help, and Ard, it turned out, was one of those kids. He was clearly unhappy with the extra work he was being forced to do, and he made that clear with his defiant behavior. But I knew I wasn't going to give up. Each student has their own unique story, their own challenges and barriers, and my job is to help them overcome them. Gradually, over the course of several of our lessons, I made it clear to Ard that I was willing to listen and support him, but I wouldn't tolerate rudeness.
