Vash is depicted as a tall, blond man, about 180 centimeters tall, with blue-green eyes. Vash's hair resembles needles, which sometimes gives him away, or gives his friends the opportunity to come up with nicknames for him (e.g. Needlehead). Beneath his clothes, Vash's entire body is a hideous patchwork of large scars and huge chunks of missing flesh replaced by metal plates and metal stitching. The only part of him that has escaped such damage is his head and neck, which are otherwise in perfect condition. Vash displays throughout the manga and anime two very distinct personalities. Initially, Vash often exaggerates silly characteristics to make people feel unthreatened and to hide his identity, as well as using these outrageous actions and chronic kindness as a way to mask his own pain (as noted by Millie). He exhibits an almost obsessive love of donuts, engages in lewd behavior, plays with the local children, and helps and befriends adults, as well as making occasional odd jokes or quips (for example, upon meeting Wolfwood, he introduced himself as "Valentinez Alkalinella Xifax Sicidabohertz Gumbigobilla Blue Stradivari Talentrent Pierre Andres Charton-Haymoss Ivanovicci Baldeus George Doitzel Kaiser III"). He frequently utters the catchphrase "This world is made of love and peace", which he usually supplements with the "V" gesture, or peace sign, much to the confusion of friends and acquaintances and the chagrin of his enemies.
